Fitted my r34 Brembos today. No major headaches but it did take a lot longer than you would think mainly due to some stubborn bolts and my general ineptness (never played with brakes before!). I don't want to appear like I'm an authority on the subject or anything but I was thinking about putting these pictures up in the form of an HowTo type thing wrote out properly in the relevant section. Wondered if some of the people on here who do know what they are doing could give me their opinions on how it could have been better. The pictures show up all the brake fluid I was pi*sing everywhere trying to undo the brake line nuts!

I removed the front brake lines because I was hoping to make the skyline nismo braided lines fit. I have 300zx ones but not here so wanted to use the skyline ones in the meantime. Unfortunately it didn't work so I put the normal ones back on for now.

I junior hacksawed the dust cover behind the disc as otherwise you have to remove the hub assembly which seemed a major hassle and unnecessary.

The drilling of the holes wasn't too bad, although a little emotional as I didn't want it to go wrong for obvious reasons. I did it on the car with the steering locked. I used a variable speed drill (quite important as the single speed one is too fast and jumps around) with a 14mm bit (fitted ok) and did it very slowly and deliberately. I checked every few seconds that it was staying equal and square. I must admit it did seem to be slightly off but seemed to balanced itself off and the calipers went on fine.

The rear ones are the same as the skyline so it was just a case of taking the old ones off and fitting the skyline ones. The braided hose from the skyline worked here (which is good as I don't have braided ones for the back).

I then bled them as per the manual.

I'm using the second hand discs and pads, hoping to get a few months out of them before getting new ones. They don't feel all that good yet and are vibrating on harder braking, but do still stop well. I'm going to give them a week to bed in and then should know if they are warped and need new discs and pads.

All opinions useful thanks. :smash:

You can remove the shield without taking the hub off by slicing through the 'ring' around the hub with a dremmel or even a chisel.

I was considering cutting it ,but thought it would be useful to leave it for protection?? Good point though.

Fook me is this an R 32 site ???? 34 same thing IMHO........... LOL

Not sure TBH, can't see it being too much use. I took it off because I was going to put cooling ducts on there, but then couldn't easily get air to them. Guess I might have another go when I bin the intercoolers.

  • Author

Thats a good idea. I've got ducts underneath the 99spec bumper that feed air to the intercoolers. I wonder if you could make more just behind to feed air to the discs

Does look well behind the wheels mate ;) the condidtion of Skyline discs when buying these kits is often the minor downside when buying a job lot.

As you can imagine, these guys mainly upgrade cos their present system is no longer upto the job for one reason or another so discs tend to be quite worn, best options are to either skim them or replace with some newies, erm cough-cough :p It's a start though mate and well done, you done more than i would have attempted.

Neil, these are nowt like R32's mate.

cheers

smithy

was thinking more of something like these:

I have those jd...and some ducts to go with them....and have removed my fogs for the inlet

Like you said...

it doesnt look too easy to route it through...but im hoping

Where abouts do they fit? After castle combe the other day I really do think the big (and maybe only) real weakness of the Zed is the brake fade. These would be well worth the money I reckon. Dave

What pads are you using Dave?

Not sure mate, they are the same ones that TonyC had on when he sold it. Obviously they are off now the new calipers are on but they had plenty left. Pads on the brembos are ds2500 but not much left. Will probably replace disc and pads unless they ware in and stop vibrating. What do you use?

Always used the ones Smithy sells and never had brake fade, when was the last time you changed the brake fluid?

The last phot shows the rears, just havn't taken any phots of the car as a whole yet. £750 for full set with discs and pads although its looking like I'll need new discs and pads.

Do you mean on the track as well? I've never had a problem on the road but on the track day they would fade to nothing after five or six laps of hard braking. It's possible that the fluid needed changing, I don't know when it was last done.

ive got r33 discs and ds2500 pads and the whole lot fades like buggery after a few adventurous round abouts and a roads... are the r34 discs bigger then ??? im really saving for a 355 *32 ap 6 pot kit had them on my cav turbo albeit smaller 320 *32 never faded once even when i took it to brands and razzed the car to within half inch of its life AP all the way !!!

Yeah I'd love to have some AP ones, the price was the problem though. I'm surprised yours fade on the road. Even my stock ones never once faded on the road. I bought the brembos specifically due to the brakes being known to fade after hard use. It was the only thing on the car that needed doing really. It was proven a weakness at the trackday so I'm glad I got them. Maybe its your discs/pads or fluid that needs sorting? as they are good brakes. Dave

i think its my driving style im always very late on the brakes and left foot thru roundabouts when the mood takes me no lag what so ever can get hairy bu thats half the fun... but left foot braking isnt good for brakes they take a hammering im gonna change the fluid but that aint gonna cure it

there not wide enough to disperse the heat quickly enought ... the zed barkes are actually bigger in dia (320) than my cav turbo but narrower 28mm versus 32mm on my cav and im adament its the width.... dunno im might try some porterfield pads and dba discs before binning the brembo stuff in favour of ap ........ I NEED BETTER BRAKES !!!!!!!
