:( I bought a powersteering sensor that was said to be for my car.....

however when i went to fit it I found that it was about a inch too short.. and at the end of the shaft it was a differant spline.... it was green instead of red... (dont know if that makes any differance)

Anyway ... old one back in... and I am now buggered.

GRRRRRRR

Any thoughts about it?

I guess you can say I am shafted.

lol.

no thoughts.... I was expecting at least someone to say.. well you bought the wrong one...

doooh....

anyway i am clueless... so anyone else replacing theres. let me know....

what does it look like... i can post mine...

pps... might be for a auto.. or even a slightly earlier car

up for sale.

jonrms,

I am guessing from your description do you mean the speed sensor in the gearbox? if so there is a difference between auto and manual, the manual one been longer.

The speed sensor delivers signals to the speedo , cruise control, engine ecu and the power steering etc if the speed sensor fails you will experience problems with all of these, not just the steering.

However the signal for the steering comes from the speedo head so a problem here with the speedo or a delimiter fitted if an import can cause similar signal loss problems with the steering hard /soft setting.

Post again with some more details and will explain the test proceedure.

Jeff,

I posted up on the board before.. and was told it was the speed sensor... My power steering comes on and off.. mostly off now... So i went out bought a second hand power steering pump... but the club told me not to fit that before I get a new speed sensor.. My speedo is fine. i dont have cruise control. I have a 5 speed gearbox. however i do have problems with the idle going up and down.. but i believe that is a seperate problem in itself... the steering goes hard soft etc... but as said mostly hard... it is a import and has not yet been chipped... so i am after doing that soon.... see my previous post..

anyway i am buggered.. i am really getting annoyed with this car.. and might just take it to nissan soon.... please help

jonrms,

If you feeling pi55ed off now do not go to a main dealer that has the potential of really spoiling your year!

The steering control system works on a low voltage of around 5 volts so poor connections can cause this problem.

The actuating solenoid is located on the end of the steering rack ( drivers side) and is accessable by raising the car slightly from that side.

Check the connection, it can corrode or short out due to it`s prone position, the signal can also be "lost" due to a faulty steering ecu or a broken cable from the ecu to the solenoid, have seen the later a few times and often seems to occur after dashboard work has been done, (alarm or similar).

Do not get too down, if all else fails call or mail me and I will go through a series of tests in detail with you.

might of been told this before but a speed delimiter fitted on imports can cause PS related issues check the wires behind the dash, there will be a wire spliced in to the speed sensor sometimes this becomes loose or the delimiter unit just packs up,worth a look if not already
