the guy who sold me the car said that he will check my cambelt....

so he opened up that round black thing. theres 2 he opened the left one and there was some rubber bits and he said the cambelt needs to be changed asap. so what was this guy doing

Featured Replies

Right, taking a bit of a guess at the vague description I am assuming he pulled the cam belt cover back to look at the belt which frankly is a waste of time as a genuine check, however the rubber bits he saw and mentioned will more likely than not be remains of the cam cover gasket /seal which goes hard and breaks away when the covers are disturbed.

To be honest unless you have photo proof with receipts of the belt change just get it done and then you can relax.

i suggest if you have no clue about engines or cars in general you either take a qualified mechanc with when you view a vehicle or even better buy a bicycle as i am a qualified mechanic what the guy was doing was partialy removing the cam belt cover to expose the belt to check for damage as you have not stated wether the belt was in good condition or not i cannot give a better idea of how to help

p.s. buy the bike lol

SHOULD READ CAM BELT COVER

im not disputing what the rubber is i was just trying to explain to our missile test pilot that the guy was trying to perform a visual check and not a good one at that there is no way you can check a cam belt visualy from the top only it requires complete removal at which point you might aswell replace it anyway

Sure your are dead right, this is how unsuspecting owners can be mislead either way, agree with you fully z eveo guy.

what sort of £££££ is there in getting the job done? how often does it need doing ...?? cheers guys

Needs doing at 60k miles.

Ryan at Ztech does the belts, waterpump and funny little hoses all in for around £400-ish IIRC

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Buy a car

Change the cambelt

Simple.

I never trust any receipt, any garage, any seller, ever.

Just not worth the risk.

Can you remove the waterpump without taking the cam belt off??

Yes, but just i think.

Yes, but just i think.

I believe so too.

I had my cambelt changed when I first got my ZX only for the water pump to give up 3 months later

Luckily my warranty coughed up for the waterpump so I didn't have to pay out all that labour again

Virtually all the front of the engine came off again but the cambelt remained untouched that time.

Richard :)
