im going to start to fit a new sill tomorrow and was wondering if just dissconecting the battery is enough or should i dissconect ecu

if ecu aswell how do i do it

Featured Replies

ECU is under a panel in the nearside floor easy to get at would be best to disconnect if your going to use a MIG.

ive never seen the point of disconnecting anything and never have done and have necer had a problem with any car ive welded, the resistance of the steel you are welding is far lower than that of the wiring to the ecu, and there isnt even a current path back feeding through. do it if you want but if you have a good earth to weld off then i wouldnt bother, damage would only occur if you were to touch a live wire with the the stick or wire and it back feeding through to earth, but if your going to do that then you deserve it to happen LOL.

if your gas welding then i deffo wouldnt disconnect anything.

spotwelding it think would be safer than mig/arc/tig as the current path is so short.

id be more worried about setting fire to the paint in the inside of the sill than blowing anything electronic.

have fun,

Fraser

You'r unlikely to cause any damage but it's still good practice to disconnect the battery, just in case.

It doesn't make much sense to disconnect just the engine ECU and leave the other 4-6 ECU's (ABS/HICAS/AIRCON/AT/CC/FUEL) connected...

if your mig welding just disconnect the battery and you'll be fine but i noticed fraiser gti mentioned spot welding don't spot weld a sill on a z as it's close to seat belt and suspension mountings so it needs to be a constant weld around the outside otherwise it's a mot failiure

i welded my zed front and rear sills and under the rear arches, i disconnected the battrey thats all you have to do

ye thats right, i just mentioned it as a form of electric welding. but it will need to be a continuous seam.

Talking of sills, my Z had an advisory on the MOT saying that the rear sill area around the suspension mounting had some corrosion and needed repairing / replacing. I'm gearing up to get it done. Is it a HUGE job, or is it the sort of thing a good body shop can do, and not neccessarily a Z specialist? Cheers!

luke at z centre does replacement panels for them but i'm really lucky as the guy who does my repairs is sh1t hot he rebuilt the back end of both my sills and all the inner panels etc as well once finished and stone chipped you cant see it's been repaired
