Hi all

Just bought a new PC to replace decrepit old laptop.

Question is, how do I transfer all my old data - mainly photos and documents etc - to the new one easily.

Bear in mind, old PC has no CD recorder and new one has no floppy disc drive.

Could I use a home network and link them together by cable, then extract info from the old one? If so, how do I do it?

Suppose I could use USB pens but would probably need a dozen ;)

Also need to copy email address book......

Any thoughts/ideas welcome.

Thanks,

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

network cable would work if its a crossover - failing that you need a little hub.

Buy a big USB mem stick.

Thats will be the simplist way. Plus USB mem sticks are always handy to have.

What version of Windows and outlook where you running on your laptop, as different ones save the emails in different places. You are better off clearing down your emails first anyway. Get rid of the ones you dont need.

Email address book is a file ending .wab

I make sure I've got the email account set up on the destination PC first so I can make sure the file goes to the right directory. :)

Networking cable is a faster transfer. It needs to be a crossover cable.

- Go to network connections and right click your local area connection. Click on tcp/ip and click properties, then click the 'obtain ip address automatically' radio button.

- Also on the desktop, right click my computer and go to the computer name tab. Check the workgroup name is the same on both computers (it probably will be if you've never touched it). Restart your computers.

- They should appear then if you go to network places and click on the local network icon/workgroup/microsoft network or whatever.

- You then need to enable sharing on each computer so you can see the files from the other computer. You can share whatever folders you want, but the easiest thing for you will be to just share the c drive. Right click on it and click sharing... Tick the boxes to enable sharing and allow other users on the network to alter files.

- You might need to restart again to give it a kick up the arse.

- You can then see the other computer from each one and can transfer files by copying and pasting.

- This is a little inexact as its from memory but if theres you have any probs give me a call, pm'd you my number.

Dave

you can also do this by using a usb network cable, it will have a small thumb size controller in the middle of the cable available cheaply from pc world etc... or me ; )
