guys im confused why so many people appear to disable the hicas on 300zx / skylines, i thought the idea was that the HICAS helped you with the handleing ? Am i to take it that even if the HICAS is in a well maintainned condition that its still not that great?

I've been wondering the same myself. Must admit the rear end of the car does feel abit strange when you go for it on corners but after a week or so you get used to it.

having only had my zed a little over a week i have just started to get used to the un-natural feeling from the rear of the car but love the way the car just runs flat through corners no matter how hard i take them

The hicas is a very good driver aid system provided the component parts are in good condition, often though it flys in the face of the macho rear end out over steer guys that want to feel more in "in control"

Often when removing a very worn hicas system the driver will appear to feel the difference and then be a converted hicas removal advicate.

However most of the hicas eliminater bars actually re-use the steering arms that actually wear out on the original hicas, if these are worn and are not replaced then frankly your wasting you money fitting the hicas eliminator.

Driver aids can be hard to get used to, like ABS brake systems, despite the fact that with ABS you need to plant you right foot hard on the brakes in an emergency you often find drivers will releases the brake pedal and then re-aplly aka "cadence braking style" because they probably have been driving for a long time before abs was so commonly available, hicas is the same, you need to have faith in the system or you will use it incorrectly, opposite locking during a tailslide could well defeat the hicas operation and maybe in some cases make it worse, back off and let the electronics do the work, easy to say but hard to follow through when you see a kerb coming up fast and them new 18" rims are still shiny and bright.

Hicas is good for everday drivers, maybe a better more experienced driver would benefit from not having it fitted, a personal choice I suppose.

Nissan do have that annoying habit of knowing what they were doing when they conceived the Z32 ,best leave as it was meant to be I say, but fully working of course with no wear.

Ok so who's removed it and why??.. Apart from the "It's never worked and I can't get the light to out" or "I want my Zed to handle more like my Vectra" type a blokes :)

Hi Jeff

Very well put I agree with you 100%, HICAS Rocks once you get used to it. 300ZX ABS on the otherhand will kill you if you let it. I've driven 3 TT Zeds since I got mine and none of there ABS unit's work. The lights go on and off as per MOT but jump on the brakes and it's a wheel locking field heading roller coaster yer on. Any ideas why would be greatly received.

cheers guys, i dont mind tail sliding the car, and my old 200 was great for it, but im quite a track day fan, so am i right in thinking once im used to trusting the HICAS, it should be useful on the track in keeping the car straight, and il just have to adjust my sliding technique when i get close to the edge on tracks?

Took me little over a week to get used to hicas, in my opinion it's fantastic, as you say high speed cornering is superb, the car stay's sooooo flat in the corner you just keep accelerating. If you want to hang the rear out in slower corners the lsd works briliatly too combined with the hicas, although with the auto box in drive, it can take some getting used to the piont at which it will start changing up, or down once you get it sliding.

I say keep the hicas, anyway, replacing the worn out track arms is a doddle of a job and a damb sight cheaper than the lock out bar, arm's at about £35 quid a side or £395 for the lock out bar, which still uses the arm's, mine is staying. :hyper:

It's always worked well for me! IIRC there was an issue with some Jap imports and certain speed delimiters/convertors causing problems with the HICAS many moons ago..
