if you have a jap car and you have a speed converter fitted, it could be that on its way out, or the speed sensor fitted to the gear box, both of which would cause the same symptoms and are more likely that the PAS pump or steering rack.

i agree, also check the tension of the belt.

the pump will either work or it wont, cant imagine why it would only work intermittantly.

how does the speed converter effect the power steering pump... the engine is running fine... gearing is fine. the belt is fine. i had a thought to suggest that a valve in the pump is going... possibly a blockage.. or a air bubble...

hmmmm

anyone know who to take it to that is nearby....

i am near hull.

i gotta really get this investigated... its a right bugger.... because my fluid was leaking from a hose... so i assumed that debree or air caused a malfunction...

how does the speed converter effect the power steering pump...

hmmmm

because it interferes with the speed signal (power steering is speed sensitive)... take off your instrument hood and disconnect it and see if it's any better - but remember your speedo will be kph!!

How did it go? did you get it sorted..my car is doing the exact same thing ..no idea why

mine is doing the same thing aswell and its in kph so nothing there, belt fine, fluid fine, no leaks, noises, is there a possibility that bearing have gone inside it or something?!?

the only thing i did do around that time it started going was when i disconnected the wire to stop that annoying bell kicking in every time it went over 100kph

I didnt disconnect anything.. I have bid on a new pump because I dont understand how it is electrical. #

I dont have any electrics that would effect mine. Mine does not have the 4 wheel steering... and does was in KPM. instead of mph.

I am really puzzled and i believe it is the pump...

but anyone is free to prove me wrong....

its a bummer to drive without powersteering....

hmm have we stumped people in here???

if so please let us know where there is a Z'd Garage that can locate the problem for us....

Thank you

have you deffo checked the speed sensor as the steering is speed sensitive a dirty connector on the sensor will cause the steering to be intermittant.. it controls the pump and creates steering light when driving slow then as you speed up gets heavier.

speed sensor is on the gearbox it also sends a signal to the speedo some times the speedo fails or jumps but not always other times the fault only lies in the steering signal thats how it can be an electrical fault!

My Jap Import used to do this but I solved the problem...........I sold it

sorry

A very common problem on zeds is the universal joint/steering knuckle. When shagged it makes the steering go soft/hard/soft/hard. I've had this problem on each zed, easily repaired yourself but the joint itself is around £120 .

It's deffo worth a try. Its located at the end of the steering column attached to the steering rack.

Thanks Chewie, that was what i was suspecting..

Where do I get this from... any recommendations...

Plus if you can send pics in your own time. This will help me/us look for this problem and try to sort it... I am going to try to locate the speed sensor and disconnect it... by theory it make the steering light at all times... but wont register the speed.... is this right???

Thanks again!!! a drink is comming to the one who is right first...

think if you disconnect the sensor completely the steering will be heavy all the time not light!!! if its faulty eg not working it cant tell the pump what to do can it? so heavy

bugger. anyway i just won a new speed sensor from ebay....

but its for a turbo.. i dont think that matters....

fingers crossed.

is it a bugger to fit???

apart from the obvious .. that you have to work on your back in a car that is lower than my grannys boobs,.

Thanks Chewie, that was what i was suspecting..

sorry jonrms,

don't have pics of the joint, but a search might throw up something. You can buy a new joint from mjp (Mike Feeney) , a trader on here, or try Andyz at supercarparts for a used one.

also I notice you're in north Yorkshire, which is where i bought my zed, Saltburn-by-the-sea or something like that

also a dodgy delimitter if fitted will cause the same symptons

agree with a couple of others unlikely its the power steering pump, next time it does it also check if the speedo is acting erratically, which will deffo prove its speed related, if you have a delimitter fitted try disconnecting

Hi billy.. its still restricted.. trust me i know...

so its the sensor or this rack...

i bought a new sensor so i will try that out...

99% of the time the power steering is not working.. occasionally it kicks in...

so the sensor will be the first thing i check... only cost me a 5er.. on ebay...

how cool. :hyper:

I have a similar problem.

When i reverse out of my drive, i turn the wheel to full lock, then as i pull forward and straighten up, the steering wheel pulses a few times. Weird feeling.

Fine after that. No problem.

deffo sounds like a dirty plug on the sensor try cleaning the connector before changing the whole speed sensor

Mine is mostly off... but it comes on at silly times... kinda the opposite...

ebay sold me a new sensor for a 5er... cant wait till i get it...
