Hello, this is my first post and im not too much of a technical person so bear with me. I have a 1990 UK 300ZX TT Auto that is completely standard, I aquired it a couple of weeks ago and its wrong! Here is what I have established are the problems, oh dear here we go!

New/recon turbos required

Engine oil seals front and rear

Radiator (upper hose broken)

Possible Hicas link bushings

Compression test results:

1 116psi

2 113psi

3 114psi

4 95psi

5 114psi

6 89psi

Engine requires rebuilding due to low compression. Suspect piston rings as cause, recommend full rebuild with new forged pistons/rings, cambelt kit (belt/tensioner/water pump etc). Block will require rebore. One turbo seized requires replacement/rebuilding, both turbos to be replaced. Crank seals part of rebuild work.

Im quoted 24 hours work for this little lot. @ £45 hr as for the price of parts I dont know yet. Is that good or bad?

As I see it I need to make a decision, is it worth it. I would like to save this beauty and bring it back to life but do I keep it standard or do I go for some extra BHP if I go for all this work. I figure if I go for it I will go for forged pistons. I would appreciate your comments, the car already has a SS decat exhaust, thats all!

My personal ideas are possibly 360 deg turbos, hicas eliminator bar, new disks pads vented, drilled, traction control. Basically im not looking at having a 500bhp beast as I know the car is fast anyway but if I could get around 60bhp extra or so... safely then I would be interested. What do you folks think. Of course the other option is just import a jap manual car for around 5k and start afresh but I would like to keep this one on the road.

I'd try to get someone to agree a fixed price for the engine rebuild rather than an hourly rate. But aside from that £45/h doesn't sound too bad.

You can easily gain 60hp just by raising the boost and chipping it, of course of you have decent turbos, good intercoolers and stronger pistons then you may get a little more and it'll last longer.

Hi

That lot is gonna cost alot more than 5 or 6 k assuming you get the car for nothing. And you are talking quite a timescale to do all that - and that is all you know at the moment - there are bound to be other jobs and they will cost.If you really must do it then good luck. But it would be simpler to buy one from one of the guys on this forum. At least they are known cars, on the road running and quite often modded.Could save you alot of time and money. There are enough cars for sale in the UK without importing - but as they say the choice is yours.

Might as well uprate the internals if you are getting it rebuilt. Ideal opportunity to add in the extra strength and reliability. Maybe consider removing air-con, cruise control, and all the other extra stuff that causes problems? Mine has had all this done and runs so much better than the old one. I think Zed pistons are forged anyway although might be wrong? If you get the rebuild then make sure the garage does actually get the full engine set or at least replace all the seals and the like, as its quite pricey and I've seen garages that have done a rebuild and only bought the essential bits like head gaskets so they can save money and make more. People like The Zen Garage and Z tech on here are well worth talking to for advice and quotes.

Your engine sounds like it was in the state mine was when I decided to do a full rebuild on it.
