anyone know what would cause this?

Noticed tonight oil pressure a little low - topped it up but when car is ticking over it sounds like someone is hitting engine with a hammer.

If you look in the oil fill hole and watch the cam go round it seems to be at same speed as that.

I have tried putting more oil in but it hasnt quietened down.

how low was oil level before you topped it up. These cars have small sumps and there is'nt a lot between min and max. Letting them get as low as minumum can cause damage :(

that I dont quiet know - there is no dipstick on this car

I have always just done the 3k mile change.

Never had a prob before

new oil has been in for about 1k.

what damage could have been done?

could it just be a noisy tappet?

Im beginning to doubt now whether noise has always been there. . . . . .

From my experiance.. there could be a number of things...

Tappets... oil pump.. it could be completly unrelated to the oil issue...

but most likely not....

worse case ... dare i say it could have caused piston damnage.. depends on the noise....

cant really say... i would have it looked at quickly if your not sure... could be something simple... but if it sounds like a banging noise... its a worry.

if the cars been sitting for a while i think its normal for it to this, quietens down after a nice long drive. something about hydraulic lifters? one of the techies will confirm

mine has a noisy cam as well it's just the hydraulic lifters wear after a while mine just was like it when i bought the car and has suddenly got worse but mine has done 130,000 miles so a top end rebuild is the answer look in the traders section ryan at z tech is your best bet to get it sorted
