Well, I know the threads pop up as a result of things going wrong, let's face it, no one's going to start loads of threads saying how reliable and problem free their TT is.

 

I'm hunting for one at the moment. Infact Jeff and Zedworld is on the case for me. He seems to have a good reputation on here, so quite confident he'll be able to get me a good one.

 

Now, just getting cold feet looking at the money that people are spending on their cars. I cannot afford to have a car that is going to sap as much money as people are spending on repairs. I know this is a huge consideration that I've got to take. These cars are pricey to fix and one has to know this before purchasing a Zed. But by and large, are they reliable?

 

I am not one to modify really. Although my current car is modified, it's the only car I've ever modified.

 

Engine wise, it'll be almost standard. Just a nice set of dished split rim alloys and some upgraded suspension componentry....something like this beauty...

If it's any use bud, I've been driving mine through this hot weather daily for the past couple of weeks. took a long spin with the wife and kids yesterday, no probs at all. as said in previous posts there are a couple of things that are a problem , ptu's , and rear shocks another.

But well looked after, a 300zxtt should give you no trouble only a big grin on your face!

tvrdb03 ...the curbing marks are not that deep, factory paint on wheels (as I've found) is actually quite thick. When scratched up, they look worse than they are. So basically, I rubbed all the scratching back using a 400grit paper. I then feathered back using an 800 grit and finally a 1000 grit. I applied a coat of primer. With a light coat you can see where any light scratching marks are. So then you can finish off feathing out.

 

Once done, I could then wash the wheels down with a lightly soapy luke warm water. Left to dry for an hour, then applied the base coat silver. Lots of even coverages. Metallic can be a bitch to spray as the particles fall differently dependant on which angle you're spraying the article at. So, nice even light strokes on all directions. Basically, you want to eliminate shading.

 

Once given a dry of about 30 mins, you can apply your lacquer. Now, most people try and get the finish from the can. That's not the way to do it. Initial finish is not important as you achieve finish when flatting out. What is important is that it's sprayed on evenly and finely. Build up a good thickness of lacquer and leave for half a day to dry.

 

Once dry, you can prep the lacquer. I used 1200 wet paper and went over the entire wheel with it, removing the top layer and giving the lacquer an even 'dullness' all over. Basically, you flat out any imperfections and give the lacquer an even finish. Removes orange peal and any light marks.

 

Once done, you're now ready to cut back with a cutting compound. I used G3 as it's pretty much an industry product. DON'T use anything like T-cut as it's not the stuff to you.

 

You'll not achieve shine so much with G3 either. It's a cutting paste and will just smooth off the lacquer before the finish with polish. I used autoglym super resin polish. You need to be quite firm and abrasive with this. A good few coats too. Not a pleasant job, but the more you work at it, the more of a glassy finish you get.

 

Hey presto, the end result. Now I'm not a panel beater or grease monkey, I just taught myself. No difficult, just time consuming if you want to get a glassy finish. I used the Cavalier to practice on. Might buy a compressor soon as I have a garage. Just for odds and sods. Might buy a track car next year and will spray that no doubt.

 

Legrath If you want me to do it, I could have a go...although they are quite large. Guess it's the large rubber spoiler. Not too sure, you'll need plasti-paint that expands with the heat.

 

Pete That's my trusty old Cavalier. Was a bit of a heap when I bought it. But since I drive it a lot, thought I'd clean it up a bit. No rust on it or anything, so came up quite well.

Quite handy with a spray can.

I'd do it for sure if I had a compressor/airgun. Would need a respirator too. Only sprayed the rims and mirrors housings with Cellulose. Whilst it's adequate for small areas, a whole bumper I'd prefer to do in 2k. Paint lays better and you don't need to spend as much time flatting it back.

 

Thing you have to worry about with celly is that it won't bond to anything that isn't squeaky clean. So if you've been waxing your car or putting trim care on the tyres, then you'll have the areas totally covered in silicone. Paint will just blister. Need to clean the area really thoroughly and attack the bits with strong degreaser wipes.

 

2k will sit on most things, but still doesn't like silicone that much.

I have owned two zeds now, an NA which never gave me any trouble (though I gave it plenty, not half as handy with a spray can as you :)) and the TT I have now which I bought knowing it had a few issues, neither has broken down or let me down. Accept what it is, learn a bit about basic looking after/ servicing and you will not be dissapointed.

Thanks Jock. Well, I'm a reasonably proficient self taught mechanic. Managed to cram a V6 engine into my old Astra with not too much problem....and rebuilt the engine myself.

 

Zeds are much more complicated though, but I'm sure I'll learn...well, don't want to have to learn too much. Just cam belt/roller changes and general servicing will do thanks. :)

I thought that I was a good DIY mechanic when I first popped the bonnet I sid shit and shut it so quick...

LOL! Does look scary. But when I first past my test a 1.3 rot box looked scary.

 

Unfortunately Haynes don't have a book of jokes for the 300ZX do they...so have to rely on raped technical manuals from Nissan I guess....or am I incorrect?

I managed to rebuild my last Zed's engine with practically no prior experience of cars. Just did a massive amount of homework at the same time. Had a few problems (Having to DRILL out a head bolt for instance!!) but it started up first time and I learnt a load in the process.

As for reliability, that zed's engine was a nightmare as i suspect it had been abused in the past culminating in my rebuild (which went again 3mths later, probably because I didnt replace the shells).

On the upside though my new one has been completely faultless. I've only had it a month but have done several thousand miles up and down the country, often pushing it hard. Hardly even runs warm when giving large for extended time on those quiet nightime motorway drives! Got it off another member here.

In summary: buy one, you'll be addicted from the moment you drive it. Jeff is completely reliable and will get the best he can find for you. Put some cash aside for emergencies and if you don't need it you can spend it on nice new tyres or something.

I have had my car for over 4 years now and it has broken down once. PTU problem which I suspected. Got it towed home and 10 mins later it was running perfectly again.

Still not clued up on the 'zed' terminology...but guessing the PTU is a dispack/ignition regulator of sorts.

i bought mine in 2000 only thing i have replaced is the auto box ,she is a stock motor no mods apart from a little styling ,and i would sell my soul to the devil to keep her!

go get one and driiiiiiivvvveeeee it ,dont store it use it thats what its made for!.

keep looking for a good one dont rush into buing the frist one mine has been a pain in the ass, had it 18 months had loads go wrong and have spent thousands on it, i would have liked to have spent on mods. i thought i had a good one i was wrong. the guys here are very helpful and are slowly helping get mine right :bow:
