Hi guys,

Just been for an MOT and been informed I have a split somewhere in the steering rack and a fluid leak. Just wondering how much the rack is new (from Nissan only or can you get them elsewhere?) and what the opinion is on getting a second hand one put in?

Thanks in advance

PJ

Will most likely just be the ends, much cheeper. take it to somewhere that knows the Z and get them to take a look, and find out exactly where the problem is.

Cheers for the info, takemetothepub

Just had a word with the tester and the only slightly more specific diagnosis is that a gaitor has split - don't know if that narrows the problem down.

I'm thinking I might go for the new rack anyway - the leak did crop up at the last MOT, at the time I visited a garage recommended here where I got an additive to the steering fluid (I think, it's been a while now!) that stopped the leak, but it was never supposed to be a permanant solution... I have a feeling it might be the rack that creaks in damp weather too :D

I've got a quote for the Nissan rack at £695 plus vat, is that the only option when going for a new one?

Speak to Mike Feeney - MJP Auto in the traders section, mate.

Hiya Vijay mate, good to talk to you again!

Shit that's a lot of parts. Can kinda see how it all adds up to that kind of price, and why it'd be a bitch to trace the problem. Ah well, guess I'll go ahead with the new rack - will be good to see the back of that leak at least.

Thanks for looking up those parts for me though.

Raz is the leak not from a pipe rather than the rack....I changed my rack with another 2nd hand rack for what I thought was free play in the rack....only to find out the rack can be adjusted. But I have a leak now but its from the pipes at the OSF of the rack.

If u want a new rack go for it but maybee there is no need for the rack to be changed...surely the garage who checked for the MOT can elaborate where the oil is coming from exactly and with garages I think sometimes a 2nd opinion is required before I part with hard earned cash.

Just my 2p's worth mate.

Cheers John Crisp

if it's any use, i bought a very good used rack from Zedworld for less than £100. hope you get sorted.

Mine is leaking from somewhere as well..maybe the same problem..makes a few noises when turning the steering wheel at slow speeds..I can see oil leaking from a big hose joint with 1 black hose going down and 1 up bout inch diameter on the back of the ps pump( what i assume to be the pump) is this happening to anyone elses? does anyone know if this can be simply tightened or does it need replacing? Is the p/s system a bitch on these cars?

anyone from london know how to diagnose or fix? neoplanet222@yahoo.com

cheers guys

take the hose off and take it to your local hydraulic specialist, (the kind of place that fixes JCB's and forklifts and the like) they will make you up a new hose for next to nothing compared to a genuine item, and those guys will be able to make it so it doesnt happen again.

Thanks for the advice John, and everyone. I agree with you about getting a 2ns opinion, but I'm a bit screwed at the moment as I've not long moved to this area (just outside Southampton) and don't know of any steering/Z specialists, and also the car isn't taxed, so I can't really go further afield :headvswal :D I'll give MJP another try on Monday and see how the prices look.

Cheers, PJ
