Those grey import square plates with the tall slim lettering...

...I'm sure you know the ones I mean.

Can you still buy them? They probably are not longer legal, I used to remember when the first grey imports used to appear up round Bristol, some 10 years ago, and most of them came with these plates.

Never see them around anymore.

Featured Replies

you can still get them, just search for 'show plates' on google, a few sites do them.

While we are on the subject, does anyone know the actual law on mini (or none for that matter) number plates on the front? I've heard (but didnt believe) that early imports didn't require them?

I have printed out the exact law requiremnts on this and have it at home, there was a link to it a while ago on here. It is open to interpretation but tbh a proper size plate can fit on somewhere, so we are on a losing battle I think.

Having said that, I have shaved my front number plate mount on my 99 front and not having one at all, risky but........it just fell off a minute ago officer, honest.

Its all in this thread ;) :-

Clicky

Apparently a sticky plate is a nono...

and...

You can have motorbike size plates/lettering if its pre 97 and an import where the vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates.

And apparently its less of an offence/penalty to have no number plate than it is to have an illegal one...Go Figure

It would be good if it was ok as thats what ive got....

but in andys post #11 it says this :-

Are stick-on number plates legal?

No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

Unless they have now approved a certain sticky number plate?

Anyone?

ffs do they have nothing better to do with their resources than employ a load of self important un-qualified boring w4nk3rs to try and justify their existence by thinking up weird and wonderful laws regarding number plates? Same applies to H&S too :(

E Type Jag Had Stick On Plate I Is Legal As Long As It Is Standard Size And The Letters Are Spaced Correct

Correct. So too did the early lotus Elise and many more. Sticky number plates were made illegal in 97 so if your car (which they all are ) is pre 97 you can have a sticky plate so long as it is correct size (UK spec if UK and Jap spec for Jap import) and clearly visible.
