  lost the gearbox on m25 last night.

stuck in loads of traffic, started slipping when moving away. eventually lost drive completely! after pulling over, stopping and restarting engine got drive back for a short time(although slipping like mad). limped home like this having to stop repeatedly, probably doing more damage on the way

i'm embarassed to say the i bought an autobox cooler last summer from chris @greddy but never got round to fitting it.

anyone got any cheering words of advice, am too depressed to look through search history for ideas.

I can comiserate with you there. I was just one day from getting my first Z when the BMW I was p/xing destroyed its autobox. Best advice I can give is to take the car or just the box to an auto transmission specialist. This is about the same price as a recon box but the work is guaranteed. Or you could go for a manual conversion. Plenty on here about that.

Good luck.

Will have one going soon mate,If worst comes to the worst!

Still in car at the mo' so can be tested etc.Hopefully it will be something simple

thanks for the advice/sympathy. just feeleing a bit stupid cos i never fitted that oil cooler. hindsights' a wonderful thing aint it.

think i'd rather have a manual conversion but seems that finding the parts is the prob.

may just have to get the box rebuilt as suggested.

and all the week before my holiday to cyprus for 3 weeks.... doh

cheers

ok so i've calmed down a bit today, time to weigh up my options.

do i get auto box rebuilt? replaced? or go for manual conversion.???

think i'd prefer the manual conversion option but got a feeling that, apart from sourcing the parts it may be a bit too pricey.

so rebuilt or replaced??

am going away for 3 weeks from sunday so ideally would like to leave car b4 i go and pick it up 3 weeks later

all ideas greatly appreciated

cheers

thanks for the advice wez. think the filter is probably blocked hence the having to stop to get drive back(think all the crap drops out of the filter and then gets sucked back up again!)

it's how the filter blocked and the burning smell from the oil that bothers me.

will check it out though b4 i write it off completely.

thanks again

  • 3 months later...

Hi Nick, Col here i'm the guy wez mentioned thet had trouble with his auto box...few months ago came to a set of lights and the auto box lost the will to move the car...Anyway what did was got under the car and removed the plate from the bottom of the box cleaned the mesh filter that runs the lenth of thye box....replaced the plate and filter and topped up with new oil...This worked a couple of times but the sludge and crap in the gearbox kept coming back, so i replaced the box...

Try this first before you replace the box, or if you know anyone with conzult, they can check the pressures in the box etc.

Col

Sounds like oil problems, I spoke to Ryan and even half litre out is critical. have you checked the level?

Thanks for the advice but my box was knackered too. :(

currently with Zen for a manual conversion. hoping to get it back soon, has been bloody long summer without it.

cheers

The fact that the filter is full of kak indicates the real problem. It's usually the clutch plates & bands that are breaking up !
