so what im asking is anyone local willing to lend me an ecu for time it takes two swap over ,to see if this cures problem , mines a uk 92 twin turbo auto, anyone local willing to help as me car goes to ryans on 9th july and dont want to drive it there again on 5 cylinders

I'd be willing to lend you mine for a day, although I'm not sure how well it works, there's a multitude of problems with my car and I don't think its the ECU (I spose you could do an ECU diagnostic when you stick it in your car). I can't be bothered to drive anywhere so you'd have to come get it and bring it back. My car is a 91, H reg, TT auto.

Btw. I live in Hindhead, just down the road from the infamous Hindhead A3 traffic lights.

hm, exellent cheers ,, will be in touch , i have friend with conzult he maybe able to help you ,, is your car running at mo, seeing as , i think it maybe ecu , i could also bring my ecu to someone to see if it works ok in there car etc!!! just a thought, !that way one way trip, ,, ill bring the biscuits ,you put the kettle on ,,lol ,

Yeah my cars running (my car runs real rough but it has to do with faulty MAF/vacuum leak, although I know for a fact that it doesn't misfire), I was going to do an ECU diagnostic but when I got out there I found the car had flattened its battery :headvswal . Come get mine/bring yours round, either way is good for me, I'm free late evenings (I get home from work about 19:00) during the week and Im free next weekend, the weekend after that I have to go and get my engine but I may be able to spare a few minutes.

Btw. If you're unabe to pm me then just post on this thread again asking for my email and I'll stick it up

is it an intermitting misfire or a cylinder that doesnt fire at all?

what about puting a screwdriver up to your ear and resting it on the injector on the offending cylinder and check its ticking. it might be faulty of sticky. at least if its ticking you can be fairly sure that as long as there's fuel pressure, itl be getting fuel. i would doubt if it was the ecu, as its nice, cosy and dry in the footwell.

you could modify an old H.T lead, tie the coil pack down, to connect to a strobe light and see if its the spark that breaks down.

hi fraser , were 99.9 % that its not fuel injectors ,as there is no spark to cylinder, thus beliveing ,, loom or ecu or ptu etc,, and missfire is constant never changing at any rev range and has done so for last month car has not moved off drive for same reason,

i'd say more likely the ptu or the loom, it should be possible to pick up a trigger voltage from the ptu, this might eliminate the ecu and the loom to the ptu, fault might lie between the input side of the ptu and the coil pack. im not 100% sure if you can do this, but my understanding of transistorised ignition as that a 5V trigger is sent to the ptu and this switches higher V pulse to the coil.

paul might be worth trying another PTU see what happens

Paul,

Try this before you make any further efforts. Unscrew the big blue connector on the ECU, take it off, make sure all the pins are in good condition and look to be making proper contact and then reconnect it. Be sure you do NOT overtighten the connector and that it is seated correctly. This big connector has a habit of not sitting correctly or when overtightend causes all sorts of strange problems.

This may not solve your misfire but it's an easy and cheap thing to do. Let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Dan

Agree with Danny 100%. When I changed my ECU, I overtightened the connector and had a couple of intermittent problems until I realised :( Drop me a line if you need any help Paul - I sold my series 1 PTU last year but may be able to get hold of a spare... May also be able to help with an ECU swap.
