Just wondering really!

I've had an intermittent rough running problem for ages, but more recently I've noticed that the longer I run the car for before setting off, the less likely I am to have a problem.

Usually now I leave it for about 90s before driving off, which is hardly warm I know, but seems to help; however my drive to work is only 15 mins through a town, and quite often when I pull up and dip the clutch at the end of my journey the engine revs up to 1500rpm. Only if I wait for about 15s does it then drop down to 600ish. Again, if I warm the car up for longer, the less it tends to happen.

Wondering if anyone else has had anything similar?

Mark

Don't run it too long, just till the idle settles down a bit. Last time I did it for a few mins, it set the Carbon Monoxide detector off in the house!

I had a similar problem when I first bough the car, but a good clean of the throttle bodies sorted mine out.

About 2 mins at a guess, then its kept under 3000rpm with light throttle until water temp is 70c+

...and about 2 mins idling before switching off at end of journey.

Turbocharged cars need to be quicker..to make up for all the extra time spent idling on a journey ! :wack:

I just start her up, and drive her LOL ... She doesn't get driven hard though, not until she is all hot and ready for it ... :x:

You talkin bout Vanessa Feltz again bud :D

Well i run mine for 10-15 mins thats what i think is best for the engine, i also take it easy for 10 mins while driving for the gear box to warm up too, after that its ready to go.

Errol 10-15 mins yeh right  :D

Chris i never rush first thing in the morning lol not when your up at 4am ;)

10-15mins..that would surely be excessive idling, and if done on a regular basis then overtime would cause problems like plug fowling and excessive coking/carbon.

Bet the neighbours love you

I understood too much 'warming up' is not good for an engine.

Start, give it 10-15 seconds, then drive but only gently (low revs) untill it's fully warmed up.

That's what they're designed for and thet's best for them.

it wont cause fouling coking! i run mine for 5-10mins once warm off i go!! bang it off the rev limiter any coking carbon is decoked :D

Fookin hell mate. I dont even drive mine for that long. thats about a fiver before you go anywhere.

I just give it time to get the oil round the block and then take it easy untill its at normal running temp?

After that it's 205 all the way.

i run mine up to 1/4 on the water gauge and when my oil pressure has dropped back to 75 -80 instead of 100 + when stone cold (at idle by the way) oil pressure guage also gives u a good idea of when the oil is up to temp ie its high when the oil is cold for the obvious reasons

As long as it takes to belt up, change the cd, adjust the air-con temp , put me spex on and unwrap a sweetie:) :)

Don't go above 3000rpm until warm tho.

Usually for a couple of mins when I set off from home - just long enough to check for the smell of burning cat...

I always wait for my oil pressure to go down to about the 4 mark on the guage. Then take a trip to the garage to fill up again ffs!!

Pretty much the same as this really - except in the mornings the car idles for a few seconds whilst I close the garage door.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I start the car, begin my journey but don't accelerate over about 3,000rpm for at least 10 minutes, that's about the time it takes for the temperature gauge to get to it's normal level.

Same here but I never go bonkers anyway (well maybe a few quick bursts on the motorway)

I think cars of this nature are a bit too quick for rallying around urban areas. Unless of couse you want to make the local gti boys cars look like they dont move when they are making lots of noise

i've been running mine for 5 weeks now - without driving it

....

i drive off straight away, but dont go over 3k revs until the engine's up to normal temperature. in the winter when its really cold i'll let her run while i de-ice the windows/chisel her out of her ice cube.

The water temp should not be the threshold you use before you give the car some beans, it is the oil temp. The oil has to be at an appropriate temp before it will lubricate correctly, this can be ascertained when the oil pressure reachs its pressure when the car is fully warmed up.

What happens if you go off without warming her up properly? I hadnt run the car for very long this morning when I left the house at about 0530 and now shes all pissy and is doing funny things when idling.... :S

Cars are designed to start up and drive off. They even say to do that in the manuals. Just dont boot it untill oils up to temp.

You should NEVER idle a car from cold, it does more harm than good, it is one of the worst things you can do to an engine! You are supposed to drive straight off as soon as you start her up. It is really bad for an engine (any engine) to idle before you start driving when starting from cold, because it is much better for the engine to be under load as soon as it starts up from cold.

As everyone else says tho, don't boot it over 3000 rpm until the 'oil', not the water, is at normal operating temp!
