Hi folks, am new to the forum and looking to buy my first Z. Have seen a 91 non turbo manual new from Japan for sale and thinking of buying it. Could someone give me some pointers as to what to look out for please. It has 40k on the clock and no real history with it (not in english anyway!) I can get it with warranty which seems to cover most things. Starts well and seems smooth burbling tickover. Havent driven it yet, thats happening on thursday. Price asked for is 4499 although the guy will have adeal for cash. Any advice please would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Steve,

Can I just ask your reasons for buying a NA? It just seems that you's be able to pick up a nice TT for 4.5k.

Vijay

Cheaper insurance!!

Have you checked that ? They are the same insurance group, and a UK TT would probably be cheaper than an Import NA !

Reasons for thinking of going for a NA are probably foremost, buying a car and the turbo's packing up and less to go wrong with it, ie: no 4 wheel steering to worry about etc. I would prob go for a TT if they had been changed and the car had been well looked after. I want to enjoy the car a bit before I have to spend money out fixing things. I am a mechanic (trained in the days of pushrods and dont work as one for a living) but know nothing about these cars so am buying a bit blind in certain areas. Looking for a good clean sound car that has been treated well and cared for, doesnt have to be showroom condition, just a solid base I could maybe build upon. Seen some nice motors in the rides section. Spinksy has a great looking Z. I am not going to rush as I dont want to buy wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Steve, as another prospective Zed buyer I know very little about them, having never owned one, but I know that when I do finally take the plunge and spend some of my hard-owned cash it will be on a UK car (probably turbo). This is because you can pay quite a bit more insurance for a Japanese import than a UK car (and some insurance companies want insure imports at all). Also, I have found that you cannot get classic car insurance on a Jap import, but I believe you can on a UK Zed - please correct me if I'm wrong anyone. I used to have classic car insurance on my Supra as it was a second car (you need to have a main car), and it was about 1/3 the price of a full insurance policy (limited to 6000 miles though). It might be an idea to keep your peugeot and get the Zed on classic it you can afford to run 2 cars.

Maybe you should get some hypothetical insurance quotes - just get the numberplate details and then try eg Tescos online quotes. For classic car insurance, I would recommend Carol Nash.

Be very careful about warranties as well. Find out which company it is and do a search on google to try and find some feedback - some of them are not so keen to pay out when something goes wrong with your car....! Bear in mind as well that the car dealers make a lot of money on them.

Good luck!

Ben

If you are a subscribed member to this forum, then you can get a good deal through Houghton Insurance in our traders section. And they DO insure imports on a classic policy, if you have it as a second vehicle. Being above a certain age helps a lot as well.

I stand corrected on the import / classic car insurance subject. In that case, I'm very curious to know if imports are much more to insure on a classic car policy than UK cars.

Have full no claims on the peugeot insurance, want to use that for the Z. Will have a look round at quotes, I should be around the 400 mark on normal insurace policy I think.

My other car is fully insured, with full no-claims, and fully comp, although as long as it is insured I don't beleive that makes any difference. I'm 38 with no claims/accidents against me and have the Zed on a limited 5000 mile policy, for around £290. Thats for a Jap import TT.

I'm sure they'd give a good deal if I was to have the Zed as my only transport.
