Hmm...advice needed her methinks...

I bought my Zed a while ago and the previous owner had had a boost upgrade done at SE Nissan. I have just put it into Redline to have an oil leak or 3 fixed and they have the poor old girl in bits. They have noticed that I need new PCV valves.

The worry is that the boost upgrade was done while the PCV valves were busted so if I just have them replaced, I could potentially be running with a dangerous amount of boost as we noticed that I have a booost jet valve and my boost was detonating at 4500rpm...into the engine.

So..here is the question, feel free to phone a friend or go 50:50...

Q. Do I go for a new ECU as I would like the extra boost or go for a boost controller like the Profec b???

Redline are going to remove all the extra boost stuff while they fix all my other bits so I will be back at factory level....but I was getting used to the extra power!!! I want my boost back.....

Thanks in advance guys...

well you need to get the ECU chipped for sure. I would personally go for a boost controller and a boost gauge if you dont have one already.

You could go down the route of adding boost jets, that would be a cheap upgrade to get extra boost.

SE Nissan would (should have, and they certainly have the experience, so I expect they did) have already remapped your ECu at the same time as fitting the boost jets.

The ECU does not increase your boost, it remaps the fuel and timing to handle the extra boost. Then you use Boost jets or a Boost controller to give the increased boost.

How much boost were you getting ? Perhaps the Boost jet size was too small, and giving too much boost?

As far as I know, SE never did anything to the ECU when installing their boost upgrades. I certainly ran a stock chip with the upgrade for a few years without any problems.

SE's boost upgrade does not touch the ECU, that is a fact. Not slagging that off cos mine has run sweet as with that for 3 years or so now.

As others have suggested, chip the ECU and get a boost controller. The Profec B is an excellent start.

Redline found out that I had boost jets and bleed valves and apparently I should only have 1 or the other...

The reason they found my PCV valves were bust was they took my engine to bits to fit the new plenum gasket and resolve a couple of oil leaks...

So if it is the concensus that I get a new ECU, what and where should I be looking? And can this be fitted independant of the boost controller?

You Just need the CHIP and get a socket put in your ECU, I'm sure someone on the forum does the chips, not sure who does them now ,got mine from John Dixon ages ago

if youre looking for a good but safe start, a JWT chip coupled with 1mm boost jets is the perfect combination... until your right foot gets itchy and you go for a controller. the chip and jets can be found for aruodn the £70-£90 mark if you shop around which makes them great value for money.

John Dixon's the man even if you want JWT chips, However I recon Johns own are better.

I will have a JWT chip for sale very soon... :)

Need to move up... ;)

and if you need the ECU socketted then I'm not far away.

Thanks...I will likely take that off you. Is it easy to fit?

It is if you're a soldering whizz. If not then bring it round mine, or post me the ECU.

PM me if you need address etc

As Andy says mate, it should be very easy to fit....

I am just waiting for a reply on PM from John Dixon so I know what route to go down and then it should be up for grabs!
