I've bee looking around for exhausts i like for my z and decided that i want some Hks carbon ti rear boxes now as you can imagine they are very expensive.

But i was browsing Halfords today and saw some Ripspeed ones which look fairly similar and they were only £100 each.

Obviously the Hks would be better build quality but what i'm worried about as they are universal and Ripspeed would they do the same job or loose power.

Basicly i'm trying to save allot of cash for something that looks almost the same, so can i have your views and if it's worth doing or not.

My understanding about back boxes is that they do not affect the power output, they are purely cosmetic although they may change the exhaust noise slightly. I found all this when searching for an exhaust for a MG so I will stand corrected if this is not the case.

It may well be worth speaking to one of the traders like AndyZ or give Demon Tweeks a call. I find them quite helpful.

The 1st 2 problems with using generic halford items is

a. The hanging mounts would be in different locations. So new ones would have to be welded on. Also the pipe position/bends would differ depending on where the stock ones were cut and welded to new pipes.

b. The bore size of a Halfords generic exhaust, which is really designed for Corsa's and Escorts...is going to be smaller. (the pipe and internal silencer bore, not the tips)

Then you have to take into account its flow characteristics. With a Turbocharged car you want as freeflowing as possible. But these items were probably desigend for NA cars where you have to maintain a certain amount of back pressure.

Exhaust backboxes can improve power input, depending on wether its more freeflowing or not. But its the replacement of the full system that improves flow the most.

mmmm....... not sure now, so how would i find this out as if i asked somone in halfords they wont have a clue and doubt they would be able to supply a tech sheet with the bore sizes.

would a mechanic be able to look in the exhaust as they are on the shelf and tell if it would be any good or not or is it more specialisd than that.

you could try your local powerflow franchise, they have about a squillion different backboxes to choose from.. must be a carbon one that takes your fancy in the range.... and of course if any welding needs doing then they can do it for you, thats what they do after all... :)

I've got a local dealer 10min from my mums plus he does nos mmmm.....

do you think they will meet the requirements which legrath said as i don't want to loose any power.

I'll give them a ring and my mechanic is really good mates with the powerflow dealer, might get a good deal.

I would have thought they would have something that suits the zed, the range is huge. I would have put a powerflow system on mine If I had known about them before I shelled out on the mongoose...

the HKS hiper is also only available for the SWB due to the nature of the angled pipework.

If you want that style then do as advised above and go for a powerflow system or the like with your choice of backbox

Legrath this has got to be one of the best and simplest pieces about exhausts I have seen.

Anyone who is unsure of what to do should "Save to the hard disk" this info and refer to it when required.

Simple , concise and no high tec mist wafting about.

Disregard this at your peril.

Have a look at this company

http://www.blueflameperformance.com

They make the exhaust systems for TVR and Lotus. They custom build ststems and are not that expensive. They also make the best induction box I have ever seen. I have one on my Honda and its superb.

Strange coincidence TomB that you should mention them.

They have already custom built and fitted my main exhaust, for my N/A SWB, and I am returning on Friday to have the front pipes (and cats) replaced.

I was very pleased with the price and the service.(obviously or I wouldnt be going back)

Pete, how much are the front pipes and decat costing you? I have a SWB NA that really wants decatting, but I've had trouble getting a decent quote off someone who seems reliable :(

Powerflow will sort you out. I have a full de-cat powerflow exhaust and it sounds great and you can feel the power difference. Having just a backbox from powerflow will make a slight bit of power difference as they ask you what you want from your exhaust and they have the different boxes to provide this! Also, they do have carbon fibre tips.

I have a set of brand new decat pipes for the SWB N/A, drop us a line as I could reserve them for you.

Cheers Dave

when i had my 600ZXR ninja i had a cabon can fitted ....80 quid !!! try a motor bike mag loads to choose from in there and the internal bore is about 3 inch straight through..nice and NOIZZZZYYYYY .........im sure you could get one to fit

I know mate, I bought mine off the same ebay advert, but when they tried the lwb system up to my shortie, there was no scope for modifying it , so they just did one from scratch.I chose to have single 6"x4" ovals, instead of the twins.

Mine was the first SWB they had seen. Although someone else has been this week or last with another one, a grey swb.

Front decat pipes have been done today for £200.

They are in Skelmersdale in Lancs. so a long drive from Bexhill, but two other people were there today. One from Southampton and one from South Essex. People will travel for a good quality product at a bargain price.

Im well chuffed with the result.

The whole thing was £590 all in, and I was consulted at every stage of production.

The front pipes for mine have been designed to work in conjunction with the Stainless Steel headers which I took with me and hope to get fitted later this year.

Look like I need to UPDATE my signature now!!!!

Thanks for the info there, Pete - sounds like an excellent deal for a custom build :) Skelmersdale is perfect for me, as I'm moving up to Warrington next week :P I'm waiting for Dave to get back to me with info on what he has, then I can make a decision and start saving some pennies.... ;)
