help My economy is even worse than most..

If I drive super sensible I can eek about 200-250 miles from a tank but thats going REALLY slow... this is acceptable but I worry about If I boot it for a bit I can literally watch the petrol guage do down!!

100 miles to a full tank of optimax when driving quick

is this normal?

Im wondering if im running a bit rich or maybe have a leak somewhere...

Going to order a smithy fuel line kit because I get the usual petrol stink on startup but it cant be leaking that much can it?

AIV's have holes drilled in them to stop the gurgle, these affect fueling dont they?

cheers

Worst case 17mpg which is traffic jam stop start, best case 23mpg which was mixed motorway 70/80 and commuting. On long, higher speed motorway cruising, around 20mpg. One of the benefits of unmodded, no boost jets or controllers etc... :D

exactly thats kind of what I was expecting, not getting anywhere close to that though...

I'm not running boost jets and im fairly certain my ecu is stock... (now theres an idea, maybe if the ecu is chipped and the boost jets removed i could be running rich?!?!?!)

SHIT just worked it out, (tank on a zed is 60 litres right?) Im getting 7-8MPG when I boot it! something MUST be wrong!!! :hurl:

I used to get a constant 18mpg for extra urban, but at a constant 80mph, I used to get atleast 27mph.

Definitely something wrong there. Sounds like a leak. Can't imagine it could be running that rich - it would drive like a dog and be dumping unburt fuel into the zorsts/cat :(

yea I get about that, but mine only gets floored, never use it as a daily drive

Do you get a hiss when you undo your filler cap? No hiss usually suggests a leaky fuel system...

best get that fuel line kit ordered pronto then! hopefully that will solve the problem...

Tank on a Z is 72 litres.

It's worth checking your O2 sensors, if they fail 'lean' then the ECU tries to compensate by overfuelling all the time.

  • Author

recently had both o2 sensors replaced by ryan... (both within the last 3 months)

and the fuel tank does hiss when I open it...

72 litres?!?!?! that makes it even worse!!! argh....

No way could you be leaking that much fuel into the engine bay - it would stink permanently, and be wet somewhere.

worth getting both o2s checked out again, i am getting shit MPG since mine went, (cheers to andyp for his conzult), if ryan puts the car on his conzult i'm sure he will be able to track down any problems,

  • Author

due to go and see ryan some time this month, will ask him nicely to slap the conzult on whilst im there!

cheers

If the ecu is modded then wouldn't it run lean??

I am an n/a owner but if you fit bigger injectors and then re-program to compensate the ecu tells the injectors to open less (as a percentage) so that your car doesn't run rich. So then if you re-fit the standard ones it still recieves the percentage figure and delivers less fuel because of it.

eg 370cc injector runs at 20% open delivers less fuel than a 555cc running at same percentage. re-programmed to say 12% for same rpm / engine load. stocks fitted back receive "12%" and therefore only open 12% and deliver less fuel than the standard set up.

Am i talking bo11ocks or what?

I thinks sensors too. leak would have to be big.

davido140, let me know if you get this sorted coz mine does the exact same thing, but it never bothered me that much, i did'nt buy this car for fuel economy.

its got stock injectors and I thought remapping the ecu to take higher boost into consideration would deliver more fuel, especially in higher revs.. maybe im wrong :D

You're right. Assuming that you have a JWT map, or something similar.

Check out the posts on fuel leaks - petrol smells etc even with new fuel lines you can get leaks and petrol smell (apparently). No one seems to know how to cure it though!
