Hi-

please can anyone tell me the absolute legal point on this-

I booked a Z (unreg'd) in for an MOT. Drove there, tested, driving home and got pulled by Traffic Police.

I explained the situation and they were not convinced that it was legal to drive without any plates. However- they were not sure and are going to check it out. I got a "HORT1",

I'm sure the law states that even an unreg'd import can be driven to/from booked MOT without plates, but try as I have, so far I can't find anything I can refer to if I need to debate this with the police.

Can anyone help

thanks

Leonard

Why did it have no plates on it?

Was it not registered?

If its not registered you are not insured and the car cant have an MOT I dont think.

every import has to have an mot BEFORE you can register it

and will say on the mot number not displayed and just contain the chassis number

You can be insured based on the chassis no. I insured mine and drove from Southampton docks to London with no plates with a "pre-booked" MOT when I got there. sure that's bending the rules a bit though ;)

It was insured, it was MOT'd - on the chassis/ vin number . ( 12 year old import NEEDS an MOT cert in order to get it registered with DVLA) - I've done Pajero's in the past

This is why I can't stand the police.

They knew what you were doing. They could see the car was in good condition and that you'd been to the MOT station.

But NO.. they are so eager to book EVERYONE for ANYTHING, they had to tell you they'd be getting back to you, bringing you days of worry.

If I were you, I'd go to the doctors and get a box note for stress then sue the barstools!!!

Rant Over..

Don't worry it is definately legal as long as you were going directly to and from the MOT Station. There is no other way of doing it.

I am certain of this as I have taken dozens of cars in the past and on a few occasions had the police check it out.

No problems matey, i used to drive cars from Hull docks after we`d brought them over from holland, no MOT on them, no Tax but covered as we`d booked them in for MOT`s.

Thanks to everyone for the help- Twinpier thanks- it is clearly stated in the DVLA website.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/exptimpt.htm

I just could find it in the 30 minute panic after getting pulled - and escorted home! The traffic police just hadn't ever had to deal with it before.

They weren't arsey in any way when they pulled me, just unsure of the law. They asked why I hadn't registered it before going for an MOT, why I didn't keep the Jap plates on it (they remove the plates at deregistration in Japan). They then escorted me home "because they didn't want me on the road without plates"!- good service!

Best mate has just been hit, while asleep and parked, by some chav driving a Beemer.

Ta Daa no insurance

If its iffy I want the cops pulling every fooker over, cos knowing my bloody luck It will be me that gets whacked.

So when you've been pulled over and been given a fine for letting your tyre tread get too low, you get home and find your house has been burgled, you'd still think the Police had got their priorities right?

I'm sorry but NO.

Too many cops on the roads, not enough on the streets.

I'm sorry about your friend, but isn't it illegal to sleep in a parked car on a public highway anyway?

Cops are a waste of space, and like busses, never find one when you want one and then three turn up at once. And none of them will know what to do, unless you are in a racial minority, and then you get let off. Look out if your English/Welsh/Scotish though.

Glad you found the relevant dvla info on their site. Good of the police to escort you home.

I got pulled in the same situation last year, beat cops. I had to explain myself. After the explanation and offer to show them all docs (docs should be in the car) - they just started talking about imports, price, how-to etc. After a while I had to make my excuses - had to get the car sorted & back to the mot station.

Liverpool Port Auctions check paperwork as the newly arrived imports leave the port without plates.LPA also ssue a copy of the relevant dvla info so you can present it to any un-knowing cops who happen to stop you.

Took my paperwork to the Police office today, the desk PC who checked it knew it wasn't an offence etc, etc, took a photocopy of the DVLA import web page to send onto the Traffic guys who stopped me.

Sorted now I hope!

:D happy for ya bud, sorry i missed this post :slap: (must read more posts) My Mrs said the only thing they could get you for if they wanted to is driving on the road without valid road fund (tax).

Too many cops on the roads, not enough on the streets.

Eh....? too many on the roads not enough on the streets...? WTF :slap:
