Why didn't I miss the telegraph pole!! :-(

OK so had a bit of a run in with a telegraph pole on a slippery bit of road, wasn't being silly and I'm still kicking myself! Nobody else involved except me and the pole, only my pride was hurt! I've had the car less than a month so ok I've not really had a chance to get too attached, but it's my first Z and I really liked it. I'm just thankful nothing else was on the road at the time! Going to call the insurance company a bit later on but would appreciate any opinions as I don't know where to start! To top it all off I just paid out for 2 new tyres on Monday and an Induction Kit off Danny on Tuesday, don't think I'll have much use for that :(

I used to like the snow!

Hi! Well he reckons it's all fixable

The good thing is that the wings are easy to remove as is virtually all of the front end so any minor jigging shouldn't be an issue. I'd be having a go.

Well this is after yesterday afternoon and this mornings efforts (when it wasn't raining or snowing!

picture278dp.jpg

Not too pretty!

I'll try and take the wings off in the morning if I can get a couple of hours off before it's picked up in the afternoon (well that's the plan at the moment). There are a load of pipes )quite a few bent ones) all over the place but I guess once the radiator(s) are out things will be a little easier to work on (but the bodyshop will be doing that I guess as it will be out of my hands then). List of bits keeps getting bigger though! Bit of a pain about the headlights they are fine apart from the brackets being broken on both!

Sorry to see this. Like you say, not too pretty... but from what people are saying, perfectly fixable. And the main thing is that you're still in one piece.

Main points to note:

See this link:

http://www.300zx.co.uk/cgi-bin/manual.cgi?list=bf&dir=&config=&refresh=&direction=forward&scale=0&cycle=off&slide=42&design=default&total=46

Measurement q-Q is the critical one to see if the chassis legs have been dragged in by the lower front cross member.

Lower front cross member is shafted - this also carries the front suspension tie-rod mounts - check the rods and mounts, if anything has been pushed back, check whole front suspension for damage.

Front slam panel/headlight mounting panel etc - replace don't use second hand - not worth the effort...

Check the inner wings for deforming/tears and replace if necessary. I'd say there was something wrong somewhere on the inner wings with the fenders being pushed back a bit...

Check the I/C hardpipes for damage/kinking - don't want restrictions do we ;)

If I were you I wouldn't worry about the aircon, cut it out and leave it out!

It IS fixable, but do it properly! I've seen too many bodged repairs on these and they NEVER drive straight, have funny braking characteristics etc...

Hope that helps a bit :)

Thanks for the reply Andy:

Measurement q-Q is the critical one to see if the chassis legs have been dragged in by the lower front cross member.

Ok just went and checked this, so should be 704, was more like 640!

Lower front cross member is shafted - this also carries the front suspension tie-rod mounts - check the rods and mounts, if anything has been pushed back, check whole front suspension for damage.

All looks ok, nothing broken as far as I can see, not too convinced about that though as that cross member is not right.

Front slam panel/headlight mounting panel etc - replace don't use second hand - not worth the effort...

Can I ask what the reason for this would be, is it not possible to weld/attach one cut from another car?

Check the inner wings for deforming/tears and replace if necessary. I'd say there was something wrong somewhere on the inner wings with the fenders being pushed back a bit...

I think the impact has just pushed/pulled the outer wing back/out slightly from look of it, not had a chance to get it off yet.

Check the I/C hardpipes for damage/kinking - don't want restrictions do we ;)

Getting it back on the road will do me ;) A couple are a bit squashed, probably try to just source standard bits rather than new shiney Smithy ones :)

If I were you I wouldn't worry about the aircon, cut it out and leave it out!

I think it's just the aircon rad/fan that needs replacing and the odd bent pipe so may as well keep it, but I'll see.

It IS fixable, but do it properly! I've seen too many bodged repairs on these and they NEVER drive straight, have funny braking characteristics etc...

Hope that helps a bit :)

Thanks :)

In a weeks time I will have a 90 JAP TT for sale

Engine-Box-seats-doors-boot have been sold. Most of the interior is still there all running gear still on except disc/pads. car has had a wack in its side so is propper written off. You will have to bring your own wheels down as I have my spares on it at the moment.

Both wings are knacked but front chassis/bonnet look ok.

I will also give you an aircon fan + anyother bit and pipes you may need.

You will have to collect her or arrange collection

£150

Drop me a line ASAP as she will be dog food this time next week

Parts alone are worth over £1k, I need the space so come on down

hard luck mate ,life is cruel sometimes, hope you get your ride sorted soon and it dont break the bank.

Hi Dave, thats a very generous offer! Unfortunatley you are about 260 miles away from me! I think I've sorted most of the bits from RiceRocketUK (whos just up the road from me), called MJP earlier for a price on the slam panel/headlight panel/radiator support, a but pricey but not too bad I guess, they suggested it was better to buy new than chop out a car, and so far have managed just about everything used. I'm sure someone else will jump at the chance :)

Thats great news. MJP are not expensive you have to remember that you drive a 40k supercar not a micra. Hope the repair goes well.

Kevin, the reason I said replace the slam panel with new rather than s/h was from personal experience ;) Its so difficult to get the alignment right its just not worth the hastle.

If the chassis legs have moved (which by the sounds of the measurement they have) then I'd inspect the inner wings VERY carefully as these are mounted to the legs. Get the crossmember off, pull the legs straight, then inspect the inner wings, especially to see that no welds have split - pay particular attention to the front suspension turret welds ;)

The hoses I was referring to are the actual metal pipes that go down to the I/Cs, not the rubber ones on the throttle bodies :)

Thanks Andy, yep bodyshop has said new panels so MJP will be getting an order from me shortly :)

The turrets look ok, but I'll leave that to the experts I guess, thanks for the tip though!

Ah ok, yep they are fine, the pole went right in the middle, everything at the sides seems ok which at the moment, every bit that is ok is good news to me :)

Do you live in Ashurst Wood mate? I think i saw you a few times pulling out onto the A22. Nice 300zx i thought (was in a Silver GTT, live down the road) Sorry to hear about the accident mate.
