Hello readers,

New owners here. We have just bought a 1990 jap spec auto TT 2+2 and are

going to have a million questions.

It was an impulse buy and judging by the cars on this site I think we paid

over the top but that's history now.......we can only put that down to

experience and hope we have a good car.

We don't want to do anything too drastic but can anyone give us an idea of

the most useful/most common/easiest modifications to make bearing in mind

our limited mechanical knowledge? (and budget)

Wheels and a new paint job are a possibility but not just yet ( anyway, what's wrong with red?).

I have read quite a bit about changing the air filter system, is that a

good place to start?

What about replacing the hoses with flexible steel ones? The reason for

this question is that I am going to give the fuel connections a once-over

at the weekend due to a smell of petrol through the aircon when cold.

Any other suggestions?

hi and welcome,

yep the air intake is a good place to start, exhaust and then a nice chip and boost controller - increase the boost a bit makes one hellava difference.

alex

Give me a call matey and i can talk you through the options & sort you out :)

But you have got an insurmountable problem. Red Zeds are the slowest of all the cars, followed closely by white, then silver. As we ALL know Black ones are by far the fastest!

basic performance mods:

Induction kit, exhaust, chip, boost controller is an option but if your on a budget then boost jets are a cheaper alternative.

you'll also need to uprate your autobox cooler & maybe think about a fast road rebuild if it doesnt hold out.

Suspension:

uprated springs & shock all round, Eibach springs with KYB shocks are a nice affordable combo.

Brakes:

as a minimum make sure all brakes are working as they should! the front pistons have a habit of seizing in the calipers, rebuilding them with a seal kit makes a huge difference. uprated pads & discs will also help.

after that lot it depends on how much spare dosh you have!! :D

I would uprate the autobox cooler first as i learned what happens when you dont (RIP Autobox)

Thanks for the advice guys it was really helpful (not sure about your message though, Chrisdavi, ever heard of rose tinted glasses?).I seem to have sorted the fuel smell, a loose connection as suspected, although I think I will go the braided steel lines route soon. Am going to look at the air intake next but need a day without rain or snow so it might take some time.

Chris at Greddy I will call you during the week if thats ok

Thanks again all

Danny/Claire

Chris@Greddy, thanks for the help yesterday. The induction kit sounds like a good offer - how do we exchange details to pay for it? Also I have a mate who is looking for the same thing, do you have two available? Does this qualify for a bulk discount? ;)

If you have two please reserve them both and I will put a cheque in the post tonight.

On your recommendation I am also going to get in touch with Smithy's Place for the braided fuel lines. Does anyone have an opinion on these? Are they a worthwhile mod?

MROGERS, can you tell me a bit about the autobox cooler and what is involved in replacing it?

Thanks

hi mate. hope this picture helps - its an uprated oil cooler which was fitted while my car was still an auto (visible to the left of the filter). the unit is larger and generally gets located somewhere beneath the air intake. im not sure if it is used in conjunction with the old one or if that is bypassed.

Do you wanna argue this out with maccas rocket, he's had to turn his boost down cause he was getting to work too early. :D

Its very easy to replace. Buy a new bigger oil cooler (got mine from z center) it come with a new bracket. Fit new oil cooler and old oil cooler onto this bracket. Connect the oil lines from your gearbox to the old oil cooler (currenty attached to rad) and fit oil lines from old oil cooler to new oil cooler. Job done.

Gruntpa64 took a pic of the set up I have if he still has the pic

Just spent 20 mins writing you a message and then found out you cant recieve it cos you aint a member.

Thats why when most people paint em they paint em blue :D :D

OK, point taken. I know it's going to be £20 well spent and am sorting it out now.

Thanks mate, that sounds manageable even for my limited talents.

Induction kit first, have ordered one from Chris@Greddy,then fuel lines then auto cooler. That'll do for starters.

See ya

Ant

Thanks for the message Ant., we are going to see if Drew's up for Sunday and will let you know. I think you're right about the mini-meet, I had never seen a ZX two months ago now there are three of us within a mile of each other.

Still having a couple of teething problems with the new baby, got a bit of smoke coming from the engine (at the back, driver's side), probably just a leaky pipe of some sort, will investigate tomorrow.

Will look out for you.
