Hi, I've loved the 300zx ever since I saw one as a child and now I'm (and they) are a little older I can finally afford to buy one and insure it!

I am going to buy it as a second car so it wont do a hugh milleage which means the TT is viable :p I have tried to research the different models but There are a few things I'm a little confused about...

Is the 2+2 actually longer than the 2 seater version? Are there any implications on handling/performance?

Is a targa top alot heavier than a solid roof car?

What is the general reliability like? I think I will struggle to find one which hasn't been thrashed (are there any?) so do they stand up well to abuse?

Finally...

Is it best to get an import or a UK car? Do the jap models have a higher spec?

Thank's in advance for any help! Sorry to be a bit boring but I'm finding it quite hard getting information about these cars!

Phil.

P.S. - Is there anything specific I should be looking out for when buying?

Hi,

Well, you've come to the right place now. There is loads of info in these forums. A good place to start is the buyers guide here . Well worth checking out the cars for sale section for well cared for examples.

Good luck and enjoy!

mate I have an SWB 2 seater as opossed to the 2+2 which is a jap import on a K reg. Black Leather Full electrics Its a phase 2 I believe and also it has dark suede trim instead of that horrible twede stuff.

The T/top is heavier but who cares and if anyone can tell any difference on a car that weighs one and half ton then Im pleased for them..

it does about 15 to the gallon realistically on a run you get much better MPG..

Theres no reason for it to be unreliable or anything.

as for power.

you dont get flung back in your seat its very different than driving a 2.0 turbo for example,

reason I compare is because I had a 2.0 turbo mildly tuned. The Nissan would waste it but the 2.0 felt more aggressive in the nissan you start to see things go past extremely fast. and a bit of a push on the forehead.

I havent tuned the nissan yet though

chris :)

Reliability depends on what the previous owner has done. There aren't too many standard spec cars left out there and some people make them faster on a tight budget, which can reduce the life expectancy of a few bits (most noteably the turbos, particularly if they've been run at increased boost via boost jets for a prolonged period). Replacing turbos and seals can cost as much as a replacement zed!

2+2's are a bit more practical on interior space. To my eye they look a bit more 'elegant' but the shorter 2 seaters do have a sporty looking stance to them. I think all 2 seaters are imports - but someone might correct me. And Imports can be more expensive to insure as some insurers will not touch them.

Check with your insurance company first m8 as the price of import cover is crazy for me compared to a uk!

then at least you know, and it may narrow it down a bit.

I think Uk models are all 2+2 Twin Turbo's.

the NA's (normally aspirated) SWB (short wheel bases) and Slicktops (solid roof) are all from the land of the rising sun
