Does anyone want to give me the bad news about what gone Pete Tong this time, based on the video clip below? I've got a pretty good idea already...

When driving, I get clouds of dirty smoke and backfiring from the exhaust. And to cap it all, I've only just put the engine back in after fixing the big end bearings.

ive seen this before with me rover turbo coupe.

it turned out the oil seal in the turbo had gone and letting oil into the engine then

burning it. cost me £160.00 to get it fixed.

went after that and a couple of hours running to get rid of the oil that had settled.

if its not that then god only no's.

I don't think it's the inlet side leaking as the oil would be burnt before it entered the exhaust. Also, the balance bar would allow the oil into both sides of the engine, resulting in blue burnt oil smoke coming out of both exhausts.

Can't see it being anything other than the exhaust side leaking. The car has been de-catted since before these turbos were brand new. The turbos have done about 80,000 miles.

Anyone any idea how much Turbo Technics are likely to charge to rebuild both turbos once I've got them out of the car?

check this out, unless bearings are fooked then mtls turbo rebuild guide will show you how to recon them

Yeh I read that a while back and found it very interesting. However, my turbos aren't standard ones and are from Turbo Technics. I doubt I'd be able to get a kit to do it myself.

Hi Mike

I have the Stage 2 turbo technics tubs which I got from Smithy. If your after prices from them then PM smithy, he will be able to help you out.

If it makes you feel any better, after 3 months of ownership, my passenger side tub went (Own fault for incresing boost), got that changed with the S2 tubs from Smithy and then a week after I got the car back, the same one went again. Turned out to be an oil blockage causing both tubs to seize....Sh1t happens hey!

Then, week later, the autobox gave in one me (Serves me right for testing the max speed on the M6 the night before)....more friggin money!

All in all mate, dont be surprised that something else has gone wrong after something has just been fixed, it happens....I learnt the £6K way! :(

I am surprised the Stage 2 seal has gone though, how many miles has the tub done?

Again PM Smithy....although if mine go again, I'm going for Roller Bearing tubs next time....and bigger housings....

See previous post mate. About 80,000 miles, all on a de-cat.

Cant complain at that mate really......I'd be happy to get half that TBH...

Yeh I was quite pleased with that too. I'm now considering whether it's worthwhile getting them both reconditioned or buying something bigger. I wouldn't mind trying to recondition them myself if I could get hold of a kit for them as per MTL's guide.
