... Is there any?

What I mean is - is there a physical linkage on the oputside of the auto (TT) box that translates the shifter action to a gear selection? Or is it all internal?

Being a lazy ass - I could just look under ny car - but it's wet n cold out there...

Cheers guys

I'm not certain on the exact details here, but when you move the shifter on an automatic you're actually moving a hydraulic switch - basically you're connecting and disconnecting different hydraulic circuits as you move through the 'box.

In addition, you're also moving an electronic switch that is connected to the autobox's ECU. These two in combination control the gear box. For further details have a look at the hydraulic and electrical schematics in the on-line workshop manual.

In addition, there's a physical locking system that's engaged when you select 'Park'.

That's where my knowledge of the setup runs out though - anyone else?

Yes there is a mechanical linkage connected to the shifter - think it runs along the rhs of the box. Like Rory says, and there are electrical switches too. There are a couple or 3 of multi pin umbilical wiring connectors. I think 2 connect down by the HICAS solenoid hydraulic valve and another on the bulkhead offside area.
