I'm just starting to get problems with the synchromesh on 3rd gear. Can anyone tell me if it is feasible to change the synchromesh rings, and are parts easily available?

Im quite suprised that you havent had crunching from

1>2 more than 2>3. syvcromesh rebuild is suposed to

be around £200 per set so its quite expensive to rebuild a box

because you had really got to do it all when its out.

Try changing the gearbox oil for Reline MT-90. Z gearboxes are known for this, Redline is the known cure :) May give slightly more wear on the synchros but they'll deffinitely 'bite' better....

mine crunches in 4th and 5th, would a knackerd shifter bush cause this

You'd probably just have problems selecting the gears rather than them crunching. Sounds like synchros on yours too tbh, try the redline :)

it's mainly when i'm using high revs ie thrashing it and when the box is cold

Mine has Redline and it did improve it marginally, but it's certainly no "fix".

Going into 4th is still bad, especially at higher revs.

As I have a brand new gearbox sitting around waiting to be fitted, what do you reckon would be the best oil ? A fully synth (like Redline, I think) or the standard as recommended by Nissan.

I'd go for standard fluid Andy. The MT 90 is known for being a bit harder on the box (thats why it allows the synchros to work better). I always use the standard Nissan fluid in mine and thats got >90k miles on it. 3rd-4th does crunch if you try to slam it in, try being more 'positive' and deliberate with the gearchange, push the stick but don't rag it, if that makes sense? Works for me anyway :)
