A friend of mine had to call the AA out today after she pulled up to some lights, and the car died. The AA bloke towed her to a garage to have the gearbox/clutch looked at, and they initially said she would be most likely looking at 1500+labour...

The car starts up ok, but doesnt move at all drive or reverse, however it will sometimes "grip" and move a little. (this is what she told me!)

Is 1500 an OK price or is she being ripped here?

Cheers!

Absolute Rip off unless she has a Ferrari or something exotic!

I had to have a recon gearbox put in my Suzuki Baleno when it gave up the ghost on me. That cost me just a little over £600 all in and thats for a gearbox!

Sounds like another case of garages taking the piss out of the girlies limited knowledge of cars! :slap:

sounds like clutch release mech is buggered if a manual...

sounds like an auto box fault though...

are u sure its a manual??

I beleve the cars an AUTO!!! people

I'd check the oil first, see if its black and smells burnt, if it does then its most likely a blown box :(

oops been answered already. Place near me fixes auto boxes . Mate took his 525i bmw auto box to him after it would only go in reverse and he fixed like new. ended up costing £250 !!

If it's an auto I paid 1200 squids all in for a soft rebuild and exchange torque convertor. Place in Watford did it and quick time aswell.

Manual? Sounds like a clutch failure to me.

If its an auto, I was speaking to a guy the other day who reconditions the Z auto boxes. He is based down south somewhere and he said because the Z auto box possesses such old technology, it can be reconditioned for around £380 (yes that’s not a typo) ...Apparently for all the parts alone cost around £90 the rest is labour. I will phone him back this week and get the company name. He tells me that he has already done some work for guys on this forum........

I dont like seeing people being ripped off, your best pulling the car away from the garage and have a local member meet up with to diagnose the problem.

Bl00dy hell Dave, is that true? So why do SE charge 2.4K for a fast road rebuild if there's not much to replace and when stock parts are only 90 squids what is the cost of the performance parts to upgrade it then? Can't be much more!

Like I said I paid 1200 quid for mine to be rebuilt, surely it doesn't take that long to remove and refit a gearbox?? Mind you I do know how much markup some of these companies charge on stuff they sell and work they do so nothing surprises me! But not happy about that.

90 squid??? sounds stupidly low to me!!

bloody bearings & gaskets cost that without clutch bands/plates, hubs, valves solenoids etc etc

I do not think they will be replacing alot for that price if you do an autobox properly there is near on 100 components that you need to replace
