First zed problem(s) - Overheated and Alternator/battery warning lights

About 1-2 miles from home this evening, floored it in 3rd gear and at about 5000rpm, felt a little hesitation.

Immediatly backed off, and then noticed the Battery and ABS warning lights came on the dash.

Took it steadily home (about 3-4mins), and parked on drive, then noticed water coming out from underneath car, together with the usual gurgling and hissing from overheating :(

Took a look and found the belt in pic below hanging off.

That explains the Dash warning lights, as alternator nolonger connected...does this also explain the overheating, as I notice belt attaches to Water pump in picture.?

Im hoping water was just coming from overflow, what are the chances there has been other serious damage done ?

The stock temp gauge was reading just under halfway !!!! , so new aftermarket one on the way.

Seriously fooked off right now

Legrath sounds like you may have been lucky the belt in question does quite rightly run the alternator and the water pump , its possible that the water pump has failed and caused a prob with the belt a little unusual but possible or the water leak could just have been from the overflow , as regards serious damage these cars do not take a lot to warp the heads but if your temp gauge was ok you may be fine mate

sounds familiar! thats exactly what happened to me a couple of weeks ago! got my car in bits at the moment, replacing the water pump and all the belts too.. real PITA cos i dont have a clue what im doing! :D

Don't forget, once you've lost water and the level is below the temp guage sensor unit you will get false readings on the temp gauge so the the gauge may not be faulty.

his gauge is faulty as we did a rad flush and topped up :(

imo i think the tensioner came loose and caused the belt to come off alternator/water pump pulley will find out tommorow, going to fit an aftermarket gauge and check temps

Cheers guys. As greg says we will hopefully find out tomorrow.

Im not sure how much water/coolant was lost, I think only between half and 1 litre on my drive, but ofcourse not sure how much while driving. Stuck finger in top of Rad and could feel water, so it cant be much ?

Fingers crossed for nothing more serious than Belt having slipped off, so waterpump stops, and loss of coolant out of overflow as water boiled......with no damage.

Your guage is probably fine. More than likely the bearings on the pump have failed causing loss of fluid, the belt to fall off, air in the system and therefore gurgling, hissing etc.

Easy way to tell. Top it up and start the engine. The pump should drip like a Wigan girl if it's faulty. It's not a massive job... a couple of hours if you've done it before.

With many thanks to Greg (and calls to Ryan(ztech) today, thanks :)), we discoverd the waterpump failure. Could hear a water dripping sound, and loads of play in the Waterpump viscous fan pulley/shaft.

New pump to be ordered then :(
