New Zed owner needs help, 300zx constantly cutting out!!

Hi guys this is my first post on here so first of all hello to eveyone!!

Ok heres my story,

i have recently brought a 1991 Japanese import 2+2, Automatic, Targa Top, Non-Turbo, Nissan 300zx.

I am well impressed with it accept for one problem, the car will cut out at ramdm times. It will sometimes cut out when idling, sometimes when your driving along. When your driving along it sometimes loses power then dies, sometime you canloses power then then it seems like its going to cut out but doesn;t quite, however now most if not all of the power is gone, the car will not rev above 2,500rpm or it judders and and the revs drop. This even happens in neutral, i can sit there with the car in neutral, with my foot welded to the floor and it will not climb above 2,500rpm before it revs down again, similar to the rev limiter at the top of the rev band. :headvswal :headvswal

I have run the diagnostics test shown here :-

http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostictech.html

i understand this is for the twin turbo version but i thought it would be the same, please correct me if i am wrong. As a result i appear to be getting this code "12*: air flow meter circuit".

Does anybody have any other useful information for me or advice and does this seem like the sort of problem that this air flow meter circuit could cause?? or does anyone have any other suggestions??

If anyone needs any further info from me please feel free to ask.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Many Thanks in advance, Vern]

Hi Vern,

Certainly does sound like your air flow meter. It's a fail safe mode that only lets you rev to 2500rpm. Better get ringing round (try Andy or Dave in the traders section), these can be quite difficult to find second hand :(

If you end up having to getting a new one, let me know, I might be able to get one at a good price for you :) - once you're paid up member of course :D

thanx guys that certainly has helped me and promptly too! :):)

Iis it an easy job to replace the AFM then, can i do it myself?

Also bit of a question, when i brought the 300 i didn't realise that the insurance for the twin turbo version is only and ext 250-300 a year and considering i am 21 thats pretty reasonable, i would like to go to manual aswell do you think this is a good idea? Also is there many parts/tuning i can apply to mine to increase performance??

What is the subscription fee and what additional benefits are there to it??

Alright mate, welcome to the forum. ;)

I'm 21 aswell, and although the insurance for a TT isnt too much more, it is a shit load more expensive to fix if anything goes wrong. Thats why i have a NA. :D (who are you insured with anyway)

Manual/Auto, all depends on what you prefer. Having a manual conversion will cost you a fair amount of £££s. See how you get on with the auto, you might just like it.

To begin tuning your NA, i would go:

Apexi induction kit

Cat back SS exhaust system

Chip

De-cat and manifolds

Underdrive pulley.

That should keep you busy for a while anyway.

As for subscription, it is £20 for your first year, then £15 p/a thereafter. Its a defo mate. Subscribing has saved me literally hundreds of pounds and you will learn shit loads about your car.

Good luck

and yes, the AFM is very easy to change over yourself, you only need basic tools :)

Vern -

I'm in Warwickshire so probably not that far from you. I've got a ConZult (I sell them) which we can hook up to your car to do some further testing and would be happy to help you fit the new afm when the time comes. Can also sort you out with the likes of an A'PEXi induction kit, chip (although on an N/A a chip won't make much noticeable difference) and exhaust system.

CheerZ!

Did on mine. :)

Did on mine. :)

Yes, but that's probably in conjunction with other mods. On its own the only thing you can do on a N/A chip is alter the maps slightly to make it more agressive and to allow for increased air flow from a free-flow induction kit. You can't modify them [the maps] to account for increased boost (obviously there are no waste gate actuators/turbos) so the resultant increase in bhp is marginal but the torque figure can be significantly affected (especially mid-range) which is what makes the car feel quicker/more responsive.

hey guys,

i am vern]'s mate. i showed him and performed ECU test too.

2 quick questions.

1. Is the ECU s'pose to have 2x LED's like my 200sx? (1x Red 1x Green!)

2. Danny what is this ConZult Diagnostic thing about? i read its compatible with my 200sx so if vern is up for it at some point we could both pop down to get them sorted..

Can't remember off the top of my head whether the ECU has two or one LED - sorry.

Have a look at my website (navigate to "ConZult") to read some more indepth info on what the ConZult is and also some screenshots. Yes, it will work with your 200SX so long as it has the same DDL plug. Basically (and this is a very brief overview) the ConZult allows you to monitor in real time all the car's sensors. It also allows you to perform various engine, transmission, aircon and steering diagnostics at the touch of a button. No more fiddling with the potentiometer on the ECU or digging it out from the passenger footwell. It also includes various workshop features which will allow you to make accurate adjustments to, for example, the TPS, base idle, and temporary adjustments to ignition timing and fueling parameters.

Where in the Midlands are you guys based?

CheerZ,

Dan

stoke mate.

i had knock sensor problems before i uprated turbo to a GTIR T28 so now i have replaced turbo (again) and chipped my ECU to stage 2 and just about to fit bigger fuel pump so this conZult thing sounds ideal to look at..

also gonna fit a car pc in the summer so could check on the fly (or does ECU have to be in service mode! (MODE IV)??

Stoke's not too far - I'm in Studley (nearby Redditch) in Warwickshire.

The ConZult can be permanently attached to the car and made to display on a tft screen (ie carputer) - no problem!

sounds good.

so what your company do? just a tuning garage?

and a quick question, how much different is the 200sx AFm to the 300zx AFM? could we just rip mine out and use it to "test" in the 300?

sounds good.

DTA-Motorsport (UK) is strictly an online retailer specialised in high performance parts for Nissan 300's and we're slowly expanding into the 350Z, Skyline and 200SX range too. I don't physical have space to work on cars as I work from home (mostly). DTA is a "by-line", I'm a management consultant by trade. I also run several other commercial websites and an SMS development company.

The 200SX AFM will NOT work with the 300ZX for lots of reason but the primary being it is incompatible ...

Hi pal welcome to the club (well once subscribed). As the other guys have said the problem is with your MAF (mass airflow sensor) or MAF circuit, before you buy another try removing the connector plug and giving it a good clean. With the MAF/circuit failing you will not be able to rev passed 3k, the car will still run though taking its signals from the TPS (throttle position sensor). The MAF's are a common failure with these cars, being so old. In my experience when the MAF fails, it fails period. You say it only happens sometimes or have I read it wrong??. If it is intermittent then I would say its probably the connector as appose to the MAF itself.

ECU

The ECU if my memory serves me right has only 1 red led, the ECU though has 2 states of operation. These 2 states are displayed with the 1 led using fluctuating pulses (you will also see this pulse on your dashboard).

You have probably heard this before, but every problem ever reported on the Z can be found on this site via the search engine. Have a look around you may be surprised.

ConZult

Is a fantastic tool, I bought one of Danny and use it daily. For the price I highly recommend buying one. 4 hours at a Nissan garage and you could of bought one.

Anyways good luck and if you get stuck don’t be afraid to ask. That’s what we are all here for :D

PS..Before you go out and buy any parts for your car, ask the guys on here.

cheers for that Dave C,

my next question was going to be is it worth taking it out and cleaning the MAF/connector itself, obviously it is :):) i will give it a go because it is an intermittant problem and definately not failing all the time. I plan to do this on sunday, where will i find the MAF, and does anyone have any engine bay pics showing its location?? I am new to this, so please bear with me. Once again Many Thanks in Advance, Vern]

Hello mate, welcome...........

The AFM/MAF etc is just off the pic very close to no-20, as the Air filter/s slip on it :D

All the best

Jus to let everyone know who helped or gave advice,

I got a second hand afm the other day, and fitted it to the zed on thursday, needless to say since then its been running sweet as a nut, no cutting out , no problems at all, the afm cost me £100 so not too bad at all,

on saturday i even dared to take it on quite a long drive to look at a new car for my brother, it was 330 miles round trip in total, and not one problem with the car at all just set the cruise control and away we went :):)

Thanks again for all your help guys!
