im having trouble actually doing anything on the Z. :headvswal

it seems as though they have designed it for people like me to leave well alone. i have no problem in understanding the mechanics, electricals or even the silly ammount of sensors (half of which do a useful job) but im stumped on how they work on these things. do you really have to take the engine out to check the dipstick? i know thats over the top but it really is a nightmare to get to anything engine related. i've had the thing half in bits for months now and through lack of willpower (mostly because i hate cut knuckles) i've got next to nowhere. everytime i do something on it i lose interest after the first hour of undoing a bolt thats so far out of reach its going 1thou at a time. so to the point:

im sick of this engine. its not a bad engine but i fancy a change. has anyone ever heard of a Z V8? im not talking the underpowered rover all the kit car boys like. im talking about a huge muther of an engine. trouble is i dont know what i can get in. i was hoping a chevy 5.7l hemi would go in but then i heard about a long block whick, apparently will go out to 7277cc or 454ci.

i know the later will probably not go in but how about the former? anyone ever done it? ever heard of it? failing that, has anyone got a spare TT engine (dont need tubs) for a reasonable sum? they all seem well over-priced (£1000 for a 10-year old engine? c'mon) any info would be very helpful. cheers. si.

Do a search or Nissan V8, I'm sure you'll find something

Hope that helps mate

when did you decide that then?

have you got it yet? any idea how its gonna work? whats the engine out of? never knew nissan did a 4.5 V8. sounds good though. :hyper:

biggest problem is getting it back here. he says "will ship to continental united states only" anyone know what shipping would cost?

actual engine layout (apart from manifolds) looks quite similar to the Z. that bellhousing looks remarkably similar.

Decided a while back. Basically I hate the elastic power delivery from turbos, and as I want to do a lot of track days next year, I wanted an NA engine.

The 4.5 is out of an infiniti Q45 / Nissan president. It's a lot lighter than the VG30 and will fit into the Z OK.

I'm going for independant throttle bodies and emerald management. Reckon 400bhp should be quite easy. 500 is probably there with some internal work, but might be a bit expensive.

Will keep some in progress pics up as we go (doing it down at Ztech with Ryan)

The Z slushbox will bolt straight to the VH auto bell housing. For manual you need a converter plate.

About $1100 when I checked. Leigh (Friday) is waiting on a shipping cost from japan for his. Shipping mine from Aus was $400AU.

bloody hell! i didnt realise everyone was going for it. whats the stance with turboing it then? just a low-pressure affair? or will i get the same gains with throttle bodies and good management?

You can turbo it, but you'll need manifolds at least and low comp pistons if you want to run any boost.

It's a personal thing, but if you must go forced ind, then I'd go with a screw blower and intercooler at about 6-9psi and get an easy 550bhp.

You won't get the same gains with NA type tuning, but it'll be sooooo much nicer. The S/C option should also be pretty good, provided you keep the throttles after the blower, but it'll be expensive too.

If you go NA first, then as long as you don't up the compression or put cams with loads of overlap you can charge it later.

i think thats the way i'll go. do you know where i can get a conversion plate and how much its likely to be? for now i'll prob leave it pretty much stock. i just want a good powerful engine in it that wont keep breaking and annoying me. cheers. si.

Have a look round TT.NET and other Yank sites, They have been doing the transplants for years. One of the sites has a list of what engines n boxes will fit in the Z....

PS..£1000 for an engine is a good price, A "Z" without an engine is worth around £300 -£500. I recently bought a smashed up "Z" just for the engine and box, and paid close on £1500.

if £1000 is a good price, how come most other engines arent anywhere near that? GTO and Supra lumps regularly go for £500 with the same technology and performance. i've seen the much sought after RB26DETT for £1200 so why is the (relatively) old design VG30DETT so much? most of them are between 8 and 15 yrs old now and theyre not that technological or powerful to make them really special (if they were 500bhp i could understand it). 280bhp from a 3.0-litre isnt even 100bhp/litre. honda have been getting that out of non turbo engines for years without the complexity or reliability problems. so i dont see how people can justify the price?

With your interest in a V8 conversion it also puts things into perspective regarding price when you can pick up a good condition, complete, low mileage, VH45 engine for £500 (excluding import) in Japan. Although this does involve a fair bit of hunting! ;) Like John says I'm waiting for both the supplier and also another import company (YALogistics) to get back to me with a price, though since I'm shipping it via "groupeage" (sharing another customers shipping container) the price should hopefully be ok.

Cheers,

Leigh.

hi, leigh. do you have any contacts for an engine in japan? i dont even know where to start. £500 for a more reliably, lower mileage, more powerful, more tourquey engine does seem a bit better than between £1000 and £1500 for the stock engine. even if it was the same money after import and conversion costs, there's more to show for it. any info greatfully recieved. cheers. si.

First off, bookmark these sites!

Plenty of useful information just a Search button away. In particular check out "lost" and "Zgringo" (Slim and Albert), the work they've done on their own Z32 V8 swaps is phenomenal. There are plenty of engines available in the States and it's easier to do business with them as there's no (well not much ;)) language barrier but they tend to be a little more pricey. I'll let you know how I get on with the guys in Japan!

Leigh.

Don't forget the fabrication work involved plus swapping in a completely new engine management system....

BTW, where abouts in the West Midlands are you mate? I'm in Solihull so might not be too far away from you.

Once mine's done the mounts will all be sorted.

After market management isn't too bad to get going, other than the CAS trigger pattern. Trying to use the Q45 stuff would be more of a pain.

Biggest problem I could see would be a signal for the slushbox if anyone insists on sticking with one.

I can't remember if you are manual/auto already John. What are you doing after V8? Manual or auto?

I'll pretend you didn't ask that Rob!!

Manual obviously.
