I know this has been covered more than a few times before but it never seems to be settled.

What power do TT Zeds put out as standard! :headvswal

I know there is specualtion that J spec have more power than UK and vice versa. And then there is Auto v Manual.

Then of course, colour makes a big difference

What do you lot reckon my 1990 J spec Manual TT in RED  would be pushing out when new in standard trim?

Anyone got any official Nissan figures for all this.

I know in Japan that all cars are not allowed to put out more than "280 bhp"

I know for a fact that standard Scoobys coming out of Japan have been quoted at almost 310 bhp and all Supras I think have 326 bhp as standard regardless of where they were first registered?

Justin - you spotted one thing that means there is usually more bull than illumination when this subject comes up: the Japanese manufacturers agreement not to quote more than 280hp.

For some facts, let me quote from that excellent book "300ZX The Enthusiast's Companion" which is the subject of another thread and can be purchased here http://www.zclub.net/postnuke/modules/zshop/view_album.php?set_albumName=books

...they were able to reach 300bhp at 6,400rpm with the Turbo and 222bhp at the same speed (revs) for the n/a.

These figures are with full US/Japan emissions control equipment including 3-way catalytic converters and exhaust gas recirculation. For various reasons the 300ZX Turbo in some versions is rated at 280bhp. This applies to the Japanese domestic market, where the manufacturers have an agreement to limit outputs to 280, to auto models in the US, which have different camshaft profiles and fuel injection settings, and to the Euro market 2+2 because of its setting for lower-octane unleded fuel.

And in the tables, they give:

N/A 222 bhp @ 6,400rpm, torque 198lb/ft @4,800

US Manual turbo 300bhp (SAE) @ 6,400, torque 283 @3,600

US Auto 280bhp @ 6,400, torque 283 @ 3,600

Euro 280PS @ 6,400, torque 275 @ 3,600

Oh and here's another little-understood reason for confusion. US bhp SAE is not the same as Euro PS. (PS = Pferde starke = the literal translation of horse power in German because the relevant authority is DIN Deitsche Industrie Norman the equivalent of our BS British Standard and not the US SAE Society of Automotive Engineers).

PS is standardised (IIRC) on the metric horsepower = 750 watt and not the old standard horsepower of 746 watt. So PS are bigger horses and the US like larger figures so stick with the smaller horses to get more of them.

280-300bhp..........UK cars are quoted by Nissan to be 280, Japanese "agreement" to limit all cars to 280 wasn't always kept to. They just quoted te cars as having 280bhp when the reality was probably higher (Skyline GTR anyone? - whilst they are stated at 280bhp, I bet they are way more :x: )

BTW only UK spec Supras have 326bhp, down to larger turbos. The J-spec ones do actually have 280bhp, although the later J-spec VVT-i engined twin turbo Soops may have 320 - ask on the Soop forum :nelson:

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Richard, surely you can't mean the Japanese car manufacturers might lie? ;)

Certainly when I was in the 2-wheeled world, all the top bikes were quoted as *cough* 125ps because this was the limit that the manufacturers had agreed to quote. :D

Thanks for the replies.

So I take it 300bhp is the figure I was looking for. Was hoping I would not be told thats it was 280!

Do I get any extra for it being red? :D

Well if you read the book(s) you will see that 300bhp is quoted in some circumstances, and 280bhp (or ps) in others. The "official Nissan" figures will not necessarily be the actual real amount - again, for the reasons given.

There is only one "real" figure and that is the one your actual car has been measured at - and at the rear wheels.

It's a bit like the accountant's reply. When you ask your accountant "how much profit have we made this year" he replies "how much would you like to make?"

Why are you asking?

Am just asking out of interest really. And am trying to work out how much my car would roughly be producing after the mods I have put on. Baggins put an underdrive pulley on my car today. Makes a real difference. Much better than expected:)

Oh yeah, I recognise you car now. I have just got back from the pub and ist really icy so had to be a bit careful but the pulley is the best thing I have done to my car so far! Its a must if your having a cambelt service done too as it cost no extra to fit it. What had Ryan done on your car?
