Sorry guys & gals, no jokes here tonight, just my thoughts.

Meningitis.

You don't hear much about it these days on the news. And probably most of you may even think it's been wiped out altogether.

Well it hasn't, it's still out there. For some reason it doesn't seem to be on the news as much as it was ten years or so ago.

There is still research going on to wipe it out totally, but it hasn't been achived just yet.

Yes they do have vacines for Meningococcal Group C, Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) & Pneumococcal, but that isn't all the different types of it.

I started to copy and paste a section from the web site, but then all you have to do is click the following link. For the full story please go to http://www.meningitis-trust.org/index.php If you have children of any age, just do them a favour, you never know it might be the best one you could ever do.

Groups at risk are young children, teenages, and the elderly.

If this upsets or offends anyone having it here, then I offer NO appoligies for this, because.................

My daughter would have been ten today, I would have been celerbrating her birthday with her................. Instead I was placing a basket of flowers on her grave, like I have done for the last seven years. She contracted Meningococcal septicaemia in May 1997, she passed away less than a day later. I don't blame anyone other than myself, but if I could just help prevent just one death, then I would be a little happier.

Thank You for reading this.

My thought's too, Sorry to hear it Dave

Try not to blame yourself Dave ...

You never know what people go through unless they have the courage to state their life experiences.

this upset me ..and I wanted you to know ..

The company I work for at the moment- Wyeth created the meningitis vaccine. They rolled it out to all US folk last year and this year and they have wiped it out over there. Its coming here soon so will do the same.

They literally cant make the stuff quick enough!

I feel for you Dave as have 2 daughters 5 and 7 and it is a worry.

I feel proud working for a Pharma company- they save a lot of lives. I dont hold much for animal rights folk. To me, a child is more important than a rat in a test lab.

Dave,

Sorry to here this mate......I really am.

I had Meningitis about 5 years ago now, basically, I was really ill, couldn't stand the light, severe headaches, rushed to hospital, found a rash on my back and front, 2 lumber punctures (1st one drew blood!!) I was pumped full of drugs, spent 1 week in hospital, discharged myself (should not have done, but I wanted to be in bed at home) I lost half my body weight, spent 4 months or so off work, and it took me roughly 18 months to 2 years to get back to my 'fighting weight' of 12 and half stone....

I've never experienced anything like that in my life and everyday I feel how lucky I am, I got away with it........only due to my age (25'ish!) and being strong (the doctors say)... no idea's how I got it or where I got it from.....people who I worked with had to have injections after finding out what I had....

I guess I got it at the right time (if that's possible) some others are not so lucky.......It really upsets me that you have lost your daughter, my thoughts are with you mate.

:( :(

Matty.

Quite moved to read this Dave, really feel for you and your family.

We have experienced a Meningitis scare in the family previously, when my little brother was suspected. Thankfully, after a few days in hospital and injections for everyone who had been in contact, it turned out be ok, but I remember the shock and worry we were all in at the time.

We have a 4 year old daughter now, and Meningitis is one of those illness's which really puts the frighteners on you.

Thank you for the advice website link.

really sorry Dave:(

had a few people i care about go, but not a child, and im not sure what it would do, but some good advice about a dangerouse illness;)

spot on Bigalz, for years kids have been given vaccines with as far as i know

NO known proven side effects, yet suddenly people are jumping on the band wagon to say their kids won't have them, ok if it doesn't effect anyone else,

but i would be mighty pissed if any of my kids caught something from them, that WAS preventable:(

Thanks peeps for all your kind words, they are very much appreciated.

As long as the message has come across to more people that may not have realised or known certian things about it, then I've done my bit again.

echoing the posts above, my thoughts are with you dave

i think it was 2000 i was admitted to hospital with suspected viral meningitis (not as dangerous but still disabling). started off with being sick so many times th only thing coming out was the green crap in your stomach, headaches, stiff neck, feeling really weak. had all the symptoms and spent 3-4 days in hospital. plenty of antibiotics and fluids, one lumber puncture (how painful!), constant headache for at least a week after everytime i was upright. dont know if i was lucky or if it was just a coincidence i had all the symptoms of meningitis but they never did find out what was wrong.
