Hello everyone, im new here, have been lurking around for a few weeks trying to learn about 300zxs

Im looking to upgrade from my golf VR6 to something japanese and boooosted and have been looking into most jap cars within my price range: imprezas, skylines and have stumbled across the lesser known Zed!

I have been completely unable to get any sort of reasonable insurance on scoobys or skylines, (24 yrs, 4 yr ncd) but have just got a quote of £650 on a uk Zed from elephant.

Ive also noticed you seem to get much more for your money in the first place, an equivalent 300zx goes for less than other makes.

So my question is..... WHY?

It surely has similar performance to a WRX or a GTS?

Ive seen it said that the reliability of a 300zx is crap, but im not sure whether this is true or not. Is it any more expensive to run than any other 300bhp car, or are they full of faults and overly pricey?

Thanks guys, please be honest :) :)

The main reason for the low price is the introduction of loads of imports which has driven prices down but what you can get is a very good car for 4ish grand yes it does have similar performance to the likes of the supra tt's and skylarks, scooby is not really classed in the same sort of section

Reliability is about the same as any car of its age!! get one thats looked after and it will last, start to up the boost and mod it and it wont last as long so no difference there and the best bit is theres more places that will work on them like Z-tech on here so there getting cheaper to repair now as well!!

Best thing you can do is drive one and if its a good one you will buy one :)

Kirbz

Mate buy one but make sure its a good un. Take a member of this forum with you. I have had mine 2 years and replaced nothing more than a rad hose and brake pads.

Cool, thanks for advice. Looks to me like there are some good deals out there: youre getting a lot of car for the money! i'll take my time and try and pick a goodun.

I cant believe the difference in insurance between uk and jap, surely theyre the same car!? I'll also be after a manual which seems to be bit of a rarity.

Shop around different insurance companies....you'll find with some insurance companies the difference is very small in cost for Uk versus Import.

Do a forum search on Insurance, to get the best companies

A lark GTST or Scoob WRX are in the same league as the 200sx but not in the same league as the 300zxTT

I know, I have a 200sx s14a & 300zxTT (I kicked the arse of many a scoobie in my s14a too ;) Straightish roads tho' )

Get one m8 you wont regret it!

If you test drive one make sure you go on the motorway, then you will be impressed!

I managed to overtake about 20 cars on a slip road going uphill the other day and didnt even go past 4500 rpm, totally effortless driving!

Can't recommend the 300 enough.

An Impreza will propbably beat it down a twisty or damp road but the 300 is so much more than fast. In my opinion it's a luxury power cruiser with sporting ability and massive tuning potential. Some say it's a supercar and maybe it is.

Good ones can be very reliable. Bad ones aren't. Fuel and insurance is never that cheap. You can get 30mpg on a long careful run but much less in town or if you tune it up.

This website is very heplful.

If insurance is the thing stopping you getting an import then why not buy a cheap daily driver as your main car and get the zed on a limited mileage scheme from Hougtons insurance on here.

Many of us in our mid/late 20's are insuring our Zeds this way for well under £300!

Just think of the savings on petrol and wear and tear you will make by only using the Zed for social stuff. Enough to pay for the running cost of the daily driver I reckon! I know it works for me.

Hope this helps and good luck in finding a good one.

Justin:)

Thats sounds like a fantastic idea, if i can really get insured for 300ish on a zed as a second car i can just buy a fiesta for £300, insure it for £300, and it would work out cheaper!

Im excited now, going to look into this today.

There are some great cars for sale on here at them moment, see the CARS FOR SALE section. Don't rush into it, go with your gut feeling about the cars you see and as someone else said, you will not regret it.

My single piece of advice would be not to look at spending as little as possible on a Z. There is a WORLD of difference between a dog and a looked after 300.

buy a goodun and you wont regret it

cant beat 3rd gear never wants to end :D

Well everyone has covered just about all you need to know!!

Most ZXs are essentially reliable but any high performance car over 10 years old will need thing replacing sooner or later.

I use mine every day for a 50 mile round trip to work and it's been fine. The only major wear and tear damage I've suffered is of my credit card in one of Shell's fine outlets ;) Still I don't care - if I'd wanted economy I'd have bought a diesel.....

Get a good one - best to buy one from a forum member IMO - and you'll not have any problems. Buy a cheap one and it WILL cost you

It is a good all round GT car with good performance, handling (in the dry at least) and looks to make the Scoob and Skyline GTS fade into insignificance.

Good hunting mate

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

One more thing, put 20quid aside to subscibe on here-well worth the money bud!! ;)

Rang houghtons yesterday, very friendly and helpful, but said they couldnt insure me on a Zed since i was under 25 :(

They said they had changed their policy recently, and they were even having problems getting under 30s quotes.

the search continues, but starting to think it might be a good idea to wait till im 25 when i'll have the option of more insurers and i can get an import.

thanks for all the advice though :)

In retrospect I'd have bought a cheaper less powerful RWD car first, and that goes double in winter!

Just something else to consider if you do decide to wait. Why not get say a 200 for now?
