Hi All, I have just had a JWT chip fitted by a local Jap Tuning firm, nothing else yet at all. They came recomended but who really knows. Anyway, it now runs so weak that it stumbles when moving off, the ECU warning light is on all the time, and this is funny, the aircon fan is on all the time, and when applying the brake lights something like a relay rattles down near the ECU too. I gave them a perfectly good car, they had to fit the chip only, and now its a mess. Actually my brother took it to them as they rent the workshop off him, I would not have taken it away, but thats another thing.

Anyone have any ideas? The chip came from this forum recently, might it be faulty? Or did the fitters cock it up? Any ideas would be great before I shout at the garage. Thanks

sorry mate but sounds like the fitting!!!

JWT chips are amongst the best you can get for the zed and very reliable

Try fitting the original chip back in to see if it is the chip

Mark, the the engine management light and the air con fan running are both signs of either a corrupted chip or the soldering work to fit the eprom carrier has caused a problem, most likely poor soldering or poor cleaning up after maybe a bit of solder material shorting a track out.

As advised by Kirbz refit the old eprom to see if that sorts the problem if not then

it would look like it is the carrier/ ecu pcb, a costly lesson if the ecu has been damaged.

Hope goes ok ..good luck

Sounds like a corrupted chip to me, probably damaged by static when they fitted it. Easily done, but it is obvious when broken as a JWT chip will always run very smoothly. They should have sussed that immediately and fixed it.

My brother is speaking to them tomorrow to see if they stand up and act in an honourable fashion. I hope so, otherwise their name gets plastered here and every where else I can and I will pay them a visit. Its true that they should have not let the car go out, which makes me feel they are already covering their back sides. Still, we will see. Thanks everyone for posting. I will let you know.

It is also possible that they have put the chip in the wrong way round

As discussed on the 'phone Mark,If the chip turns out to be faulty,I'll gladly reimburse you,let us know, and sorry your having hassle!

Like I said I never had it fitted so can't vouch for it.

Let me know bud ;)

It's probably the way the chip was fitted .... It's v easy to damage the ecu fitting it.

the idiot soldered the chip in instead of putting it in a socket as i asked. As for putting the chip in the correct ay round, i dont know...

Thanks for the offer mantav8, but i am positive it is their doing

Would it run like that if the chip is for 555cc injectors when you are still running stock?

Would it run like that if the chip is for 555cc injectors when you are still running stock?

I don't think the ECU warning light would be on if that was the case (as the ECU can't tell how big the injectors are really) - it'd just run pig rich..

Does sound like others have said - either the chip is toast (scrambled or overheated) or they melted the tracks off the ECU when they desoldered the old or fitted the new - the car is running in 'limp home' mode (same as having no ECU chip at all, basically)..

Actually it would run pig lean. You need to open 555s for a shorter amount of time to get the same fuel. If so, the warning light could easily come on for various reasons. Have you done an ECU diag to see what they fault code is?

D'oh.

I am Aaron. Please insert brain.

I was thinking of stock ecu with 555 injectors for some reason - 'scuse me, I'll be getting my coat now ;)

Still, not sure the ECU check light would be on - although running that lean, maybe it would..

Ok, now I'm really getting my coat

I have had enough of these cowboys and so am not even entertaining anything more from them other than money to fix my car, they broke it after all. My instructions were clear, "Remove old chip, fit socket and new chip" They soldered the new chip in, as I said last night, and the joints look very ropey and some are very "dry" looking. Simply put it looks a right mess. So with this in mind I feel they have messed up so badly that its all their fault. Thanks for all of your help people. By the way I emailed JWT and they agree with the type of comments on this thread, ie cooked chip or broken ECU....

Mark,

If you want to post me the ECU I'll fix it for you.

Thanks Andy, I might take you up on that offer. Another twist, my brother put my ECU on another Z, only for it to run OK?????. So the chip obviously not scrap, BUT, I fear there is an inconsistant fault. probably due to a dry joint? There is still the matter of them not putting the chip in a socket as I asked. I am going to try my ECU again, but even if it works I will never trust it fully.......The saga continues. And I am not really sure what to do.......

It is possible that the ECU connector (long blue plug) was not seated properly

It the chip was ever inserted the wrong way round I've heard it could fry it.

Also, as for what chip your've got. You could always call JWT with the serial number on the top and they'll tell you exactally what it does.

That sounds right. I had exactly the same thing happen to me. The connector wasn't seated properly.

Correct, and I have proven that ! :o

Still IMO you still need to get the ECU socketed properly so you can change chips easily if wanted. Sound like these chimps did a right bodge job TBH.

Well yes they did a right crappy job, my brother gave them the ecu today, and after a while, dont know how long exactly, hey presto, it works. Trouble is I still have a soldered chip when I asked for a socket, and I dont trust it and or them. I will probably wait a little while and see. TBH I would rather start again, but short of punching them I dont see them forking out for a new ECU now that my car runs.

They are sure a bunch of ****ers to be sure. I am sure andy can sort you out on the ECU front or JD or Ryan. So don't despair .. all will be cool.

But if you can get any money from these cnuts ..... Hope you get it mate.
