A number of you guys recommend Houghtons so I thought I'd give them a go with my old 91 200SX...

I'm currently paying abuot £340 with Elephant.... Houghtons wanted abuot £470 :nono:

God knows what the premium would be if I had a 300ZX worth say 3 times as much!

your head...

Im not firing off sarcasm mate

If you so concerned about the price that Houghtons are quoting, ask them!!!

There are a lot of the 'SUBSCIBED MEMBERS' insured with them and are all very happy.

All the best

Re-read the thread...

LOL Pick on a man in a wheelchair why dont you Neil ;) 'course it's above his head :D

Neil I'd do you a part-ex on mine as I'll be after an S13 when I sell up. But mine needs bits doing which would probably put you off at the moment. Nothing major, just annoying niggles.

Why on earth are you moving "down"?

i'll assume (cos i don't actually know) that HOUGHTONS quote lower on zx's

cos they specialize in them, same way some insurers do mostly imports etc

at the end of the day yours is not a zx, so they probably have to find someone else to cover it

as i said i don't know, cos when i got mine, i got off the phone quick cos i thought they made a mistake lol, but as i said ive now got the wifes car and my 2 with them, and WELL chuffed,

even my wifes car is chepaer with them by quite a bit

umm going back to the start of this thread and MIKES post, maybe they DON'T like you

LOL Ya gits

I dont want to sell it but the insurance has gone stupid since my claim and I need the money basically. I would run an S13 as a daily driver and sell my presnt daily driver, saving a bit more too. Just had a new addition to the family so the missus is on maternity leave for the next hundred years earning not much.

Is your 300 insured as a 2nd car though? You mentioned you have two? So is the 300 not your main vehicle out of interest?

Considering one of them is basically on the verge of super car performance, and the other can't really claim to that, that's quite amazing... Hence this topic :)

Sorry to butt in but i just saw this and thought it might keep the arguement going!!? ;) :x: :D

Seems in keeping with many of the replies :xxx:

i finally got around to calling them, i am currently paying mega bucks for 3rd party on my zed and they quoted 387.11 fully comp!!!!!!! im 27 with points and no bonus to speak of! the car has gotta be garaged but im sure I can sort that out!!

(and thats with mild mods declared too!!!)

Neil, do you have any relatives named Nelson and do you have any phobias relating to mass? Can't think why I'm asking this, it just popped into my head.

Have to agree with the fact that Houghtons offer great deals on the ZX - I discussed my renewal with them, then mentioned insuring a Shogun 3000 v6 on a K plate woth £3000 as an everyday driver....

.....which would cost more than the ZX as an every day driver

I currently use the ZX every day but am considering buying a Shogun then using the ZX less during the winter. Price for the ZX as a daily driver £490 - but when my NCB etc switched to the Shogun the premium went over £500 with Houghtons. Other quotes came out between £2-300 - as Houghtons offer deals which specialise in our cars.

Also the numbers of certain cars on the road has an effect on premiums for that car. There are way more 200sx than 300zx on the road (even more Shoguns  ). Hence a history of more claims by drivers of those cars (stands to reason  )

The rarer the car the fewer claims associated with it - hence lower premiums. I pay only a fraction more than than a female friend of similar age with similar driving history, same NCB and area. I drive the ZX and she drives a Mondeo.

Conclusion more Mondeos on the road hence more Mondeo drivers having accidents. Therefore Mondeos are a greater insurance risk. Duhhhh ;)

Think about it

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i never knew insurance could be so much fun!!

Yeah Norwich Union have a party every time my direct debit goes through

Its club insurance Neil, they are our official club insurers

I didn't realize this. I'm paying about a grand a year with declared mods + I'm an old git who's had other high performance cars and bikes.

Thats with Zurich, but do you recon Houghtons can give me Fully comp for unlimited milage cheeper. If so whats their number.

look in th traders section mark :)

Er, no...

If there are 100,000 Mondeos and 1,000 claims, that's a much lower risk than if there are 5,000 Zeds and 1,000 claims. 20times lower - but by your logic, the number of claims is the same and so the insurance should be!

The Mondeo's risk is skewed by the many many high-mileage motorway tailgating reps that drive them.

Until recently, most 300 owners have had at least one RWD reasonably powerful car before, and 300 owners generally look after their cars. For that reason the 300 is actually a lower risk than 200s in general.

Remember, they're not insuring you personally, they're insuring whichever part of their risk model you fall into. Adrian Flux for instance ask how long you have been driving RWD coupes, and if it's over a year, they give you a significant discount. This is because after a year you're much more likely to understand oversteer. :D

Another example : I'm considered a similar risk to everyone else who has had their license for 5 years - yet I have driven 3 times the average mileage in all sorts of conditions and locations. I don't get any reward for my extra experience.

Long post, but kind of related. My previous motor was a Cerbera and it was insured on a TVR owners policy. When I sold it, I didn't know what I wanted so I bought my mate's 300 off him. Quarter of the value less power and believe it or not A LOT less expensive to fix (hence the fact I sold the cerb). Despite this, my insurance premium went up BY about 300 quid a year. Since the 300 was only a temp measure I stuck with it until I decided to keep it (approx 12 months now!!) when I moved to Houghtons and it dropped to about a third of the price I had been paying on the TVR policy.

When I asked, they said that its a TVR specific policy, we investigate specifically the risks associated with drivers of this car. This includes repair costs, number of TVR related accidents, number of thefts (relatively low since the cars are not easy to sell on stolen), the sector of the driving public that tends to drive them (older, allegedly maturer drivers who are likely to have experience of driving such cars etc.).

There is also the aspect of economies of scale. You put your prices particularly low, attract a lot of drivers and make less profit per unit insured, but more profit overall.

None of these aspects individually can explain the excellent premiums we are enjoying, but in total it makes sense.

Remember also that zeds are dropping in value significantly. This can mean 2 things - (a) finding a replacement for a competitive price is more likely and (b) more likely to write it off if accident damaged as the value of repair likely to exceed value of car. Remember just cause you told you insurance company that you value the car at £7000 does not mean thats how much you'll get if you claim total loss!!!

what is it with all these dumb threads that go on for ages nowdays???????
