Boost Controllers, ECU, and Installation

I wonder if anyone of you lovely, cuddly folks in zx-land could tell me about installing a boost controller.

When I bought the Zed (which I just cannot bring myself to sell) ChrisF told me the previous owner had had it prepped for a major BHP increase.

So what is a boost controller and where can I buy one, is J@GPS the man to see? do I need different injectors?, I have read about the welding tips but have to confess to not really understanding it all.

Does it allow variable boost and how is it controlled (ie controller in the dash?>)

Also does a B/C over-ride the natural settings of the ECU?

Thanks folks

On a stock chip you need to keep your boost below 12psi/0.8bar. Any higher than this and you run the risk of seriously damaging your engine.

One of the first things you should do if you plan on increasing boost is to get a chip and an accurate boost guage which goes up to 20psi/1.5bar

so that you can monitor your boost level.

Bleeder valves or boostjets:

Cheap, but unstable.

No adjustment is possible, and boost spikes are very common problems.

Boostjets are basically nipples in the hoses to your wastegate-actuators.

They cause the actuators to "react" later then normal, so you get an increased maximum boostlevel.

Manual Boost controller: (MBC):

The manual boost controller is cheap and better/safer then boostjets.

However it's not commonly used on Z32's (which I find weird)

The MBC will still allow boost-spikes though

Electronic Boost controller (EBC):

The safest, most effective and most convenient way to control boost.

Constant, adjustable (from the dash) and stable boost ..most EBC's also have adjustments for boost-spikes

It allows the boost to build more quickly and sustain itself longer.

Most commonly used EBC's are from Apexi, HKS, Blitz and Greddy

Hope this helps..

Eric

Glen you have mail M8!!

Eric you are the best mate wink.gif

Thanks for that, glad I didn't have the SE boost upgrade now which as far as I know is the welding jet jobby. Not that I don't trust Pete and clan, just don't like the overall idea of shoving welding tips down some hosing!!! Sounds very, very crude to me! IMHO!

I wanna go the route of the EBC, BlitZ like Warrens eventually and will no doubt buy through Johnny.

However, I am concerned now, while my engine was out at Arriva Nelson Bob pointed out to me that my actuators weren't stock! On closer inspection by me e.g. looking underneath them I found that they were Turbo Technics actuators.

My car did seem to be somewhat Satanic on boost and I'm feeling a little concerned that it may have also had a boost upgrade! Is it easy enough to tell if the welding jets have been installed without too much hassle etc???

Sorry to hijack the thread but it is all related is it not?

Glenski,

Excellent mate, you know it makes sense, come to where I live and drive around for a day and it's no different from the IOW mate! Old gits everywhere doing 10-20mph below every posted limit! Tossers! Oh and tractors aswell, so feel for ya matey.

It's quite easy to see if your car already has boostjets...if your boost is higher then it should be and there's no BC in the car, you probably have the jets or bleeder valves.

If you want to be absolutely sure, you'll have to remove the thick rubber intercooler hoses (just on one side of the engine will do). and pinch the hose that runs to the actuator.

here's a picture of the actuator-hose (top yellow arrow):

If you feel there's something solid in this hose...BINGO !

Thanks Eric! wink.gif

First thing I will be checking very shortly...top banana as usual.

I fitted my Blitz controller in an afternoon with no problems at all. Dead simple.

Just make sure when you get one you also buy a pack of 10 jubilee clips, 3m of 6mm hose and 2 6mm T-Pieces (which I had real problems tracking down!)

Most boost controllers come with enough parts to fit to single turbo cars and not our lovely twin turbos.

Couldn't have done it without reference to Erics site though. Ta mate!

Chris, where did you get the difficult bits from in the end...you can't post that and then leave me hanging in the wind my friend? LMAO biggrin.gif

B&Q, pond section...

Tis true.. Worked fine on my 5 up to 18psi.. (And the occasional 24psi run)

...and if you say it works Az mate, who am I to disagree? B&Q pond section it is then! wink.gif

aaronjb 14psi is the safe level for standard

pistons!Run at 24psi and you are going to cause major dammage!

Mac - not on my Zed m8.. On my 5 - Renault 5 GTTurbo that is..

Which was running a GroupA carb, 1.5mm main jet, .8 air corrector, modified emulsion tube, and quite a few other things... smile.gif

Man 24psi in a Zed.. Even I'd crap myself! biggrin.gif

mac i cant agree there m8t, maby on S.E cars 14 psi on stock pistones but many guys run 18 psi and over on stock pistons.

(and no dont go there with my car lol cause that was S.E fault to start with biggrin.gif)

Whats a b&q by the way?

Huge great DIY chain. No idea what it stands for, though. Barbecues & Quinine? Beer & Queer? biggrin.gif

Actually it comes from the surnames of the founders in 1969 - Richard Block and David Quayle.

Useless fact of the day #210 biggrin.gif

You learn something new every day as they say.

Yes B&Q were the only ones I could find.

Halfords have them in their parts dept catalog but the 2 branches I tried didn't have stock and didn't offer to order them in - only about 50p each after all i suppose.

I said 6mm hose etc as this is what my Blitz Dual-SBC fittings required and the size of the existing Z hoses - it's possible other manufacturers controllers might have different size connectors?
