Got a nasty metallic shearing noise coming from driver’s side front wheel (I think). Seems that its one metallic shearing noise per wheel rotation so guess something’s rubbing? Doesn’t sound like the usual squeaky wheel bearing.

Brakes are real shite at the mo (coincidental- wasn’t making shearing noise when brakes were shite two weeks a ago), and just got smithy’s pads turn up today so will be fitting at the weekend. Got a spare set of discs just in case (as discs seemed quite worn). Given the above noise, anything else I should check?

I don’t think the noise is brake related as it doesn’t change whether I'm braking or not.

Cheers

Still could be the squealer metal tag that is set to touch the discs when the pads are almost worn out.

im getting a very simialr noise, sounds like something grinding, and again coming from the front wheel i think. it sounds to mee like something is crying out for oil, but i dont know where to start looking. deffo aint the engine, or gear box..... wheel bearing maybe.

any got any ideas

tab on the brake pads - its there to warn you they don't have much servicable life left. Although why Nissan felt they had to make us look like a twat by making our cars sound ****ed is beyond me....

Well done Andy/Willie- thanks for that info. The whole brakes thing has been doing my head in for a while now.

Brakes are totally sh$te at high speed. Mate checeked em and reckons pads are ok, but disks quite worn. I guess pads at the rear of the disk are gone and are making the noise. Got me carbon kevlar pads to slap on this weekend + me 2nd hand standby discs if all looks bad down there.

No rain please this weekend! :D

If the inner pad is worn then the pistons for that pad are probably sticking (particulally after a lay up for some time) maybe causing your poor braking ?

Yeah check for sticking calipers - common as hell on Zeds :( Poor braking is also possibly caused by the lack of material on the pad allowing it to cook very quickly and fading...

Whats the cure for a sticking piston? Is it a replacement job or can I strip it down and clean it up?

just to throw another idea into the hat - i had a similar problem with my cav gsi (yeah not exactly a Z i know) and it turned out that a mudguard around the top/back of the disc had rusted, bent, and was scraping off the brake disc surface

you'll need a caliper seal kit & poss pistons if excessivly corroded.

Thanks Paul/Dave!

Hope its just something rubbing or just the low wear brake pad alert thingy. Dont want to buy anything else at the mo. Got kids to feed and beer to buy!

Sounds fooking orible at the moment. Not too bad at 40mph- kinda whistles like knight rider

Got them brakes done today. Decided to get someone to fit the pads for me. £75 labour- not too bad I thought as they also cleaned through the brake lines and changed the fluid.

Didnt need those 2nd hand front disks I got from Lee, so if anyone needs em, they're yours for £20 + shipping.

Not much fun driving it at the moment as takes half a mile to stop! Better take it easy for the next few miles till they bed in.
