Ive been offered a 300 ZX in exchange for my car and was hoping for some advice as I know very little about 300ZXs.

I havnt seen the car yet but will post more details once Ive seen it and try and get some pictures.

Heres the details I know:

300ZX Non Turbo

Manual

Import

Short Wheel Base

Non Leather Seats

Gun Metal Grey

Sports Back Boxs

90/91 G

Years Mot

6 Months Tax

My car is a 95M Golf Gti 16v with coilovers, drilled disks, induction kit and 17 wheels with good tyres - 77K on the clock.

Only defect I hear about the 300 is that it rear spoiler is flacking.

Would like to know the performance figures for the Non turbo 300zx, is it crap as its non turbo and how easy are they to turbo or get decent performance from -- good fro modifying?

Does the short wheel base handle well?

Any information on short wheel base - links etc?

Are they reliable cars - spares easy to get and prices of such?

Anything I should look out for or link to buyers guide?

How much is it worth compared to golf?

:D

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

it sounds like you really need the TT!!

they are still a quick car, but not like the turbo variety.

if you want to start modding etc the get a TT to start with - too costly to get any real power from an NA IMO

Twin turbo model would be best, but think I can pichk this up cheap :)

Anyone one no its performance figures Top Speed - )-60 MPG?

No the performance?

Or KNOW? ;)

Standard stats say

0-60 5.2secs (That is for the 2 seater 2+2 you are looking at 5.6)

MPG 33 Motorway 25 Urban I think the official is, but in reality you are looking at 25-28 motorway 18-20 town.

Top speed is restricted to 155mph unrestricted its over 170+mph.

How old are you mate? The petrol is a killer cost and insurance is not cheap and dont be fooled on the cost of the cars too. They may be cheap to buy but parts are very expensive. You should be looking at keeping at least a grand to one side should any thing go wrong.

Srrrae - thanks for the reply, I was hoping to find out the performance of the naturally aspirated model, cant find the figures anywhere on the net.

Im 27 and have full no claims discount, have 9 points though, 6 come of soon.

As for running costs, I know (no) they are costly to run, dad used to have a twin turbo when they first came out. Thats one of the reasons I was considering the N/A V6, lot less stress on the engine I assume and V6 usually pretty bullet proof, also the petrol consumption should be more affordable for me.

Does anyone have a NA V6 2 seater on the boards, would be very interested in there views.

Thanks again for the advice so far :)

Im not to sure about the MPG on a NA, its a little better but I dont think its too much different.

The V6s are very strong engine and should last a very long time.

The NA stats are something like 7 seconds to 60. Its fast but not lightning. Power is 225bhp and I think the max speed is 150 or so.

my advice to you is see if there's a dealer near you with a TT and check the differnce out for yourself. The first gear pull in a NA is quite impressive but third gear in a TT is amazing!!!!!

Vijay

7 secs and 150 seems quite quick to me :) I wouldnt really consider the NA - just because its been offered to me.

To be honest a car that looks like a 300zx should have a monster engine.

Vijay good point I will drive it and if it seems like a sheep in wolfs clothing, I might give it a miss.

Na is a great car, quite a lot of stuff out there to mod it to TT power and a bullet proof engine!

.......and first gear is just......INSANE ! ! :hyper:

The first time i did this (didnt dare at first !) my TT Manual was burning rubber from a rolling start of 10 mph when i floored it ! :nono: ;)

Axle tramp is a problem on these cars though, especially the Manual car. :(

My advice would be to take a test ride in a TT !

And save up a bit more money or get a small personal loan of say £1000 - £2000.

Also try this , should keep you happy for a while ! loads of info ! ;)

Thanks for the link martin :) going to do some study before I see the car. If I get it at a good price and its a good one I will probably take it, can always sell it if I feel the need for more power and buy a TT or maybe mod it NA with TT crushing power sounds good.

Where in Scotland are ya.....1991 300 zx tt for sale at 1st Choice Cars in Govan near Ibrox, 4k i think, auto, alloys, single exit exhaust.

I have a NA and I'm happy with it (I've driven a TT and plenty of fast motorbikes).

But rather than buying a NA with the plan to tune it and make it as fast as a TT, I'd say just buy the TT, if that's what you're after. It'll be easier / cheaper.

Some would say the NA is a little bit more reliable than a TT in the long run.

my n/a is great, not quite as quick but with all those points on yer licence i would think n/a for defo as the tt may be a bit 2 tempting. N/A lot more reliable in my opinion and you can twaek her up to 300bhp with ecu etc which is my next job. Milage is no different to a TT i get around 18 in town and 27 on motorway, but as said keep some reddies in reserve i already spent 1600 quid on it and plan another 1500 on manual gearbox change in near future. Houghton insurance are cheap though, mine is 400 a year not bad when all my no claims is on my other car and this is based on 2 years, 35 and no points.

It dont really matter anyway you will want to pose your arse of and you cant do that at 100 mph so you will be cruising around at a speed that sounds loud but slow enough for everyone to see you in your glourious monster car :-)

matt

John I live 30 minutes from glasgow - but wouldnt buy an auto box - has to be manual for me.

Im quite keen on this NA now, I will let you know how I get on, when I finally get to see the car.

Thanks for all the help so far.

What parts do you need to get 300 BHP from the car - ECU - FULL EXHAUST - AIR FILTER ? Where would be the best places to pick these up cheap. It allready has twin back boxes - so would just need decatted and maybe airfilter and ecu?

Hi mate,

Just a thought, but if you are intending to mod an N/A to 300bhp (stock TT power) I reckon the insurance will be more than a stock TT.

Plus without nitrous it will be difficult and expensive to up the power from 225bhp to 300. That's a big hike - again it may be cheaper to just get the TT.

Performance:

N/A = 0-60 in 7.1, top of 146

TT = 0-60 in 5.4 top of 155 (restricted to 112 on J-spec and 155 on UK spec. Unrestricted = as fast as you dare :D - or around 170, as some on here have seen).

N/A is probably livelier off the mark for a couple of seconds, but as soon as the turbos spin up at around 30mph it's bye-bye N/A.

The SWB N/A in manual is a good choice of car and pretty rare. Good luck - you've come to the right place

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Gotta be a TT, modifying cars increases insurance, with the extra power no need to mod it unless u really want to, my UK 300 TT costs me 500 a year, try and get a uk TT and i bet u kick the NA into touch, no offence intended with regards to an NA but a TT is a TT.

Cheers John Crisp

Thats a good point insurance would be a lot more on a heavly modified NA. I wil see how cheap I can get the car - if I can get it for a very good price I will take it (keep it standard) and get used to rear wheel drive with it and then sell it on and maybe get something with proper power either a ZX TT or a RX7.

The change from NA to TT is a nightmare; first thing is that the compression

ratios are different plus all the other messing about.

Uk spec TT is your safest bet.

I stay less than 30 minutes from Glasgow and you are welcome to visit etc etc etc..

Mines is an 89 tt, auto, import.

Had a coupla things done, so if you wanna !!

Let me know...

Alan...... ;)

Go for it.....gotta be a TT.....nothing else will do. Take your time there are a few out there.

Cheers John
