Well, I decided to have a go at cleaning this this weekend. Didn't even manage to get the bloody thing off the car!

Any top tips on how to do this? I've found a nice link on how to clean it once you have it in you hands but I couldn't even get any of the hoses off it! There is a hell of a lot of very brittle looking wiring loom around there - I managed to break one small clip on the loom in the process  . Do you have to dismantle much stuff to get to this? Will probably have another look at it next weekend and allow a bit more daylight for the job. Any advice very welcome!

Cheers

You have to get the battery out, but apart from that it's just perseverence. I would recommend buying new rubber hoses, that way you can cut the old ones off, which will have gone very hard by now.

Ah, good thinking! Will any rubber hosing do the job or do I need to visit nissan? Any idea what sort of diameter?

Sorry, can't remember, it's a while since I last removed it.

Its tricky but if you have some mole grips that clamp shut then its easy to get the pipe off while everything else is in place - just get a flat bladed screwdriver to ease the rubber pipe off after you have clamped the spring clip open, then slide the spring clip off the metal pipe and it should work free - then squirt cleaner into the opening of the valve.....

Does cleaning it while its in place do the job? The 'how to' I saw showed it full dismatled.

I tried cleaning mine and a) it wasn't dirty and b) it made no difference anyway. The problem, which would normally be displayed by any diag tool such as ConZult, techtom etc, is that the electrical connection is poor. So cleaning the contacts is what you really need to do. However, I reckon that is virtually impossible whilst it's still on the car.
