Read some waffle that a xenon HID headlamp mod is illegal and subject to 3 points £50 fine, invalid insurance and failed MOT.

Some waffle about not self levelling and no headlamp washers - at least that doesnt apply on zeds.

Is this true?

I heard that Xeon lights have to be self adjusting and cleaning. That is why alot of new Japanese imports which have Xeons are taken off when they enter this country. The Japanese cars dont have to be self adjusting and what not, but they do in Europe.

so are they worth having then?

Paul

all mercs with xenons are self levelling, however i cant possibly see any reason for rejection on a MOT, neither could i see how it would invalidate insurance as long as they were aligned correctly??

Are you available for MOT tests for those of us with HIDs, Paul? ;)

I recently passed (Dutch) MOT inspection with HID converted lights without any problems.

And I (no longer) have the headlamp washers.

They told me that as long as the pattern is correct and it's alligned correctly there shouldn't be any reason to fail "European" tests (regarding the headlights)

Yup :)

as eric says, as long as the beam pattern is correct, & its correctly aligned, then there is no reason for rejection

UK cars have self leveling of the beam fitted which explains Hella wanting £875 for a conversion for a current BMW.

Self leveling is arguably not an issue on a zed as its hardly likely to have half a tonne of floor tiles from B&Q in the boot. Even a fat bloke in the drivers seat is unlikely to upset the beam. Plus zeds have headlamp washers anyway.

Prolly the Hella bod seeing his £875 aftermarket price being destroyed by Ebay is the real motivation for this.

Plus zeds have headlamp washers anyway.

Imports don't :(

LOL! lobbed mine away when i fitted my 99 spec to my UK car ;)

And what difference would the headleamp washers make to HID lamps anyway?

When they are hot and covered in dried up salt in winter they really do dazzle oncoming drivers. At least then headlight washers can give em a rinse.

my import z passed it's MOT last month and I've got HID lights, which I fitted and aligned myself. The guy never even bothered when they struck an arc on lamp ignition.

pete :hyper:

The MOT checks operation and alignment, guess as long as both are OK then not a prob.

As for insurance, if you modify/alter from manufacturers spec without telling them then they can say modified and you didnt tell them, Sounds petty on their part but they do ask you if ANY modifications.
