Help ! water leak at rear of engine

Hi everyone hope somone may be able to help.

Ok, I can drive along fine and all is well and then park the car and switch of the engine, after about a minute steam starts to come out of the rear nearside of the bonnet.

I have looked into this as much as possible and now I'm puzzled.

As the temperature of the coolent temp raises slightly now the engine is switched off water starts to collect in the troph created by the left exhaust rocker cover, this runs to the back of the engine traces down the rocker cover seal and then drips onto the nearside turbo, creating steam.

I'm pretty sure its coolant, as my level has dropped and it would be v strong if it were fuel. I looked at manuals and photo etc and can't see where the water could be coming from. The drips are about 2 a second and slowdown after 5-10 minutes (depending on how long a run I've had).

I've attached a picture with the red arrow showing the troph where the water is collecting (behind the oil breather pipe) and the yellow shows the path of the water.

Any ideas will be much appreciated

Probably one of the many hoses under the upper intake. Best approach would be to bypass the throttle body coolant feeds (not necessary in this country) and re-route straight through the turbos. Not difficult to do at all - will try and dig out some pictures for you to show you how to do it ;)

cheers

coolent pipes in throttle body... I'll have to look at some diagrams

If u do have any instructions that'll be great

I have the exact same problem, mine is the small water hoses which feed down to the turbos, its a git to do, i can get my skinny hand to the pipes, but getting a tool to it is a different matter.

I reckon it will be an engine out job to get it sorted properly. (unless anyone knows different)

In the mean time, ill keep topping her up!!

Cheers guys

I thought the small pipes were fuel ! ... these could be my problem.

I thought the turbos are cooled by oil ? not water.

I'm confused, I'll have to go out to the Z and inspect closer at what pipes go where.

If these small pipes are not needed then I'm happy to try and bypass them.

It gets real embarrasing pulling up in a super polished Z and then have it steam for 10mins. Maybe I could convince people its the water injection system venting

Thanks again

this can be done without removing the engine , although its a right pita much easier if you remove the uper intake as you can get to all the hoses much easier

Looks like a fiddly job to me but with the advice you will get off here you should manage to do it yourself..

I've finally found an image of the pipes.... I think

For those in the know which of these small pipes carry water and someone said that some are not needed in the UK and could be bypassed.

If someone could grab the piccy and draw all over it and post back that would be fantastic... Then I've got a knuckle graising weekend ahead.

cheers

Every single one of those carries water. They simply supply the throttle bodies with coolant and can all be bypassed. I'm still trying to find some suitable pictures but I'll post what I've got so far soon ;)

Andy sounds like you are my man.

I'm hoping it is one single bypass pipe and I don't have to remove all the pipes under the plenum ( looks like a job thats meant to be done with the underside of the plenum facing you )

Currently I have coil packs 4 and 6 out this should help.

Thanks in advance for any photo's

Cheers steeeeeemin Mr P

Best photo is this one:

The hose in question is the red one. Remove the existing hoses from the points where the red hose attaches to, and simply fit the hose in place between the points.

Next photo's should be of some use for finding the points...

HTH,

CheerZ,

Andy

Thanks Andy, I'll give it a go in the mornin

The red pipe on the left goes round and toward the front of the engine and then looks like it comes back to the turbo, any photo's of the side ?

cheers again

Nick

I hope you don't leave that engine out in the rain Duffer...
