im getting back into the zed and currently sorting the niggles out, one of them is that the steering wheel needs to be about 2 oclock to drive straight, is this simply that it hasnt been put back on correctly or is my tracking that badly out, i do seem to get a pull to the left when i let go, but is that just road camber as it seems to vary on different roads, what effect does the steering wheel not being on straight have on power steering, hicas etc.

thanks in advance

Hi mate

Best you get 4-wheel allignment done first, rather that remove and reset the steering wheel. I had this last year after a so-called expert set the wheel allignment  - the wheel was straight before....

Turned out he had made a righ feck-up of it, so another person who actually knew what he was doing corrected it.

The s'wheel must be straight IIRC for the HICAS sensors located in the boss part, otherwise they think you are constantly cornering and the HICAS compensated accordingly. I found that the power assistance was not functioning correctly at higher speeds and got too stiff after a long straight m-way drive. Once I had the wheel allignment fixed (cost about £50 for the proper 4-wheel setting) is was perfect :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Depends if youv'e recently fitted a new steering wheel or taken the original off for any reason and not centred it when you took it off or you've recently done or had done the tracking recently and again it wasn't centred before you/they did it :) , If you haven't done either of those then you probably just need the tracking doing so get a 4 wheel alignment done with the steering wheel centred ;) . If that don't help then you probably have suspension or steering rack damage/wear. One thing I like about my Z is my steering wheel always is dead centre even when I take my hands off the wheel  .

Hi, how do you know if the steering wheel is on straight for the sensors to work properly? ive had probs from day one with my power steering, on/off all the time but this mite have sumthing to do with the speed sensor coz the speedo works when it wants to to. Hopefully when i get this auto box fitted everything will be sweet.

Thanks

thanks for the replies, very helpfull, since ive had the car i havent touched the steering wheel and i dont know any history of the car, thing is i have a much better condition steering wheel to go on it the current one is very tatty, would it be best to take it along to the wheel alignment centre so they can fit it or is it an easy swap once the wheels are aligned.

and can anyone reccomend 4 wheel alignment centre in the nottinghamshire area ta

Put the steering wheel straight, remove it and put on the new one and then have the tracking done. Job done.

Don't know of any places in your area I'm afraid.
