To warrant or not to Warrant, that is the question??

Guys,

In March 2003, VMTP supplied and fitted a Torque Converter for my Z32 TT Auto box. It now seems as though it is on its way out, when the car is placed in to 'N' or 'P', theres a right racket coming from the bell housing(had the car on a ramp). Now, I have been advised it could be the TC or it could be the Drive plate (whatever this is?).

In August last year, VMTP also rebuilt my gearbox (Yeah I have all the bad luck!!) so wouldnt that have had to take the torque convertor off again??

Basically, I have booked the car in with them for the 1st of October, but I really dont want another huge bill from them, not when I have already spent nearly £2K with them.

So you think that they are liable for this problem?? I have only done just over 2000miles since it was fitted and I aitn running huge amounts of power!! When I phoned the guy, his comment was 'God, those 300zx Autoboxes are a pain in the ass with the amount of power they push out'. BUT, arnt they supposed to take it????

I am going to call them tomorrow and see where I stand with them before I drop the car off?

Do u think they are liable?? :( I just want you opinions please guys and gals! :(

my thoughts would be that if your car was not long ago fitted with there gearbox then troubles shoudent arrise that soon

and even if they arent liable? they should at least do a heavy discount on a further rebulid, but to say that the power output is to much for the gearbox is *****x and they shouldent be fitting them in the first place!

you deserve a rebulid at there cost IMO :( GOOD LUCK MATE

Why not convert it to a manual Mark? Jeff does it for £1500ish...

cheaper than an autobox rebuild! My auto is very slowly starting

to slip, i'll be going for the manual option.

One of the traders on the forum (can't remember who) was doing

'kits' to do the conversion yourself for £700.

Just a thought mate..... ;)

Bob, I have thought about this mate but the box is still quite new, seems silly to convert just yet...although I could sell mine I spose.....my box has got to be worth £500 still surely, cost me over double that!!

I dont think the box is knackered, I think its just the Torque converter......

Greg, thats my feeling mate, it really shouldnt have gone so soon......

Come on guys, more opinions please....before I phone them today...

Dont know the leagal side of this or anything but personaly I would not accept 2000 miles out of any product. Even brakes/tires/spark plugs/oil last longer than this and they are regarded as the regular change items! Last time I looked gearbox/converter where not on the list of change each service.

Ask them if they really think it is acceptable for it to only last for this length of use? You should see 60,000 min really if your running stock.

You might not get the full cost back but they should be paying at least 70% IMHO

Hmmm, I couldnt remember when I first started having this problem but the date on this thread has confirmed it for me.

Diving over to Grantham yesterday, gave the car a half decent run, it was wet so couldnt floor it anyway....well, I could, if I wanted to go round in circles!!

Annnyyywayy, got to the garage and gearbox oil is dripping out from somewhere. Not had the car on the ramp yet, this'll be tomorrow but that noise I spoke about was getting worse so I figured something had to happen sooner or later. Glad I made it to the garage though!!!!!

So, once again your opinions please (Diddnt get many before!! :( ) If it is the Torque convertor, which I have a feeling it is (Even though I know fVck all about them), do I get back in touch with VMTP and ask them to send me a new one or do I call andyZ and ask him how much for a second hand one and never use VMTP again?

Fellas?

Question, really, is what does their warranty state? If its outside their terms then you don't really have a leg to stand on - of course the moral aspect always comes into play and a business who looks after its customers will always do anything they see reasonable to help....

Ditto Andy Duff, Very much depends on terms and conditions, March 2003 is over a year ago , most parts have a 12 month warranty, if it is a part failure and not due to the gearbox R&I, which would be difficult to prove & outside terms and conditions then you are reliant on goodwill. And thats up to either the manufacturer or the supplier/fitter. Good luck. (if the company want to get more business then recommendation is the best way such as a good result posted on a forum where it counts.) Then again they might have enough business to turn you down flat, so be prepared.

Thanks guys, 2 very valid points and just what I was looking for, confirmation of my thoughts....

I think Matty uses/used VMTP in Birmingham for his gearbox issues and they are a multi-national company. So in answer to your question Kenny, I think they could afford to turn me down.

If they do, I think a second hand TC is going to cost about £80 (I think), adding the fact the gearbox has to come off anyway, I am SERIOUSLY going to think about going MANWELL. I wanted a MANWELL from the start but I couldnt find a good one.

Hmm, I will post back tomorrow guys when I start taking the old girl apart.....

PS. Its great going out with a girl when her father owns a garage, I get to do all my own work on her now and I am learning loads!!!

'Til tomorrow..... :duffer:

Right guys,

Got the Autobox off finally last night and you were right about those top two bolts, right mare!!

Anyway, on removal of the torque convertor, it seems as though one side of the collar is half worn down?!? As if the TC has been leaning to the side or something?!?!

This would explain the kinda wooshing noise thats been coming from the Gearbox and also the oil leak as oil was escaping past the oil seal even though it looks fine.

Now has anyone ever had this problem? Obviously I am going to have to approach VMTP and ask them WTF has gone on and I am sure this shouldnt happen after 2000 miles or less. Sam's dad hasnt got a clue WTF is wrong as he has never seen this in the 25 years he's been working on cars?? HE thinks perhaps a bearing in the gearbox has gone but the spline coming out of the box seems to be lined up???

Any ideas guys??

  • Author

I take it none of you have seen this problem before?

Well, I have now spoken to VMTP and they have advised that this is a common problem and one of two things has happened. Either the crank has too much play in it which I will test once the drive plate is off or the drive plate is worn??

I aint no expert on mechanics and that so can some explain whats caused what problem and why????

VMTP advise they can put a new neck on the torque convertor, fit a new bush and seal in the gearbox and with the labour this should be £190 which they wont give me any allowance on. :( Also, they say I need a new drive plate which from Nissan is an horrendous amount.

Can one of you more senior guys or u experts please confirm what they have told me.

I just wanna know I aint being speiled loads of rubbish....before I go splashing out loads of money on my f***ing gearbox AGAIN!!!! FFHS!!

Thanks....:x

i cnt help with any more information mark but if you end up needing another gearbox, mine is for sale

Go for the Man-well mate ;)

I can remember all the trouble you had last year mate. I thought at the time, fook me that is one unlucky fella. This just gets worse doesn't it. Maybe your Zed is possessed and wants to make you bankrupt?

Hope everything gets sorted and you get some sort of deal with this company mate.

Yaz - I may well be in touch matey! :(

Frosty - VERY TEMPTED

ChrisP - The car is worse than any woman I have ever been out with mate, serious, this b1tch drags me through a forest of thorn bushes with my legs wide open. Thats how rough the ride has been!! I just cant get my head round it! Tell you what, I bet even if I stripped the f'kin thing down to the bear shell and rebuilt with all brand new parts, it'd still fVck up on me. It looks like i thrash this car around but seriously, I hardly ever thrash it, thats what I dont get! Other cars I have owned I have abused to the hilt, doughtnuts, burnouts, redlining, etc etc, but this one, I pussy-foot about cus I Know what the consequences are, but it makes no difference!!!

I still want one of you senior guys to confirm that what VMTP is telling me is the truth. Cus if it is, I am seriously going to consider coverting.

******* car!!!! :mac1: Still love it though! :(

Rant over!
