Hi, I've not posted here before but i'm currently running a Celica GT4 and thinking of upgrading to a 300ZX, nicer looking motor with, from what I hear, outstanding performance, I've also been told they can be fraught with problems and had several people warn me not to get one....I'm a bit confused, famed Nissan reliability not all it's cracked up to be? or model specific problems? Or a load of cr*p and they are extremely reliable?

Having gone through nightmares with the GT4 I'm hoping to get something less problem riddled so any help and advice will be appreciated. Also I'm thinking of a budget around £4K is this realistic for a decent ZX?

hi and welcome, the mechanics side are very reliable if serviced as they should be, things that go wrong tend to be perishable things such as water pipes, connectors, sensors etc. since owning mine have had to replace all the water pipes a couple of sensors and a power steering pipe, and cam belt, other than that no problems at all, u do hear nightmare stories and there are plenty on here, but check out any other high performance forum and no doubt you;ll find the same, just make sure u get it checked over or better still buy one off this forum,

Hmm it wouldn't be usually, but there are a few cheap forum members at the moment. Check out the for sale section. IIRC Nelson Mainfella is asking less than £4k for his, there a plenty of others.

Personally if I was looking I'd want to spend a lot more. Budgeting £4k is a dangerous game ;)

May have to reconsider then, not sure I can stretch a lot further than that (depending on my commission cheques for the next few months!LOL), seems that there are a lot around for that money on autotrader from dealerships and the money for 1992(ish) performance jap cars seems very low at the moment, noticed there were a few on the for sale section at this kind of money.

Reliability is a big thing fo rme at the mo, not very happy with the continued problems with the GT4.

Try searching on eBay.

BUT.....

You would be unwise to buy without a full service history.

Safer to get UK car but there are some good imports about.

Manual!

TT!

If you find a car, post info here - someone might know it.

FSH!

When you view, make sure that you see it started from cold - should fire up easily.

Pussycat to drive.

Reliable? - sure.

are you the guy off gt40c with the 185?

Get a good one and it should be ok. Get a bad one and it'll be like gutter you throw every last penny into. The n/a is alegedly more reliable but slower than your Toyota I think.

Hi mate

I have a UK spec TT (73k miles at present) and drive approx 50 miles per day in it.

So far it has proved very reliable, as you would expect from a Nissan. They are essentially reliable cars but there are thing which perish (water hoses) and the excessive heat under the bonnet can cause some electrical connections to break too. It is a sophisticated and complex, high performance machine. The best of which are now 12 years old so expensive routine replacements are going to be on the cards.

Also it would seem that owners of modified Zeds suffer more problems than those of standard cars.

That said, Toyota reliability is reputedly second to none but you have had probs with your celica - you therefore must take your chances with whatever you buy.

As mentioned, your best bet would be to buy a car from a member here - we're all enthusiasts of the car and are more likely to have looked after it properly, thus lowering the risk of problems.

Good luck

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

If you buy one that has had a lot of proven servicing done, you should be safe.

I bought mine in near stock condition, the body needed a full respray, but it had had a lot of care and attention since it had been imported, which was all documented.

I have continued with the 'no expense spared' level of service and not had ANY mechanical problems at all. Touch wood. ;)

The only problem Ive found with the car is that you cant get surf boards and passengers in it. Which is why its up for sale, here comes the plug...

Up for sale
