Right, lets go as I am undecided! AUTO V's Manwell

Guys,

I thought about this the other day.

Last year I had a new torque convertor and Gearbox supplied and fitted by VMTP, excellent it was, but now, it seems as though the Torque Convertor is getting noisy?!? Well the noise is coming from that area anyway? Its going back to VMTP on the 1st of October....

Back to my point, The auto box needs an ECU, Oil Cooler, Oil pump etc etc etc etc whereas the Manwell box just needs a clutch, release bearing, plate or am I missing something?

It just seems that the Auto box has so many things that can go wrong with it when the manwell is dead simple....It also seems that the manwell gives u better fuel economy and control of the cars revs

I am sure I am either going to be corrected or backed up by Manwell owners, so come on guys, whats the story?.....morning glory?

I know it has and I have searched BUT I am asking if it is as simple as what I have put.

I am not interested which is the best, I just want someone to tell me whether the Autobox is complicated and more prone to issues (more things to go wrong) than what the manwell box is??

I like both, but I am thinking of changing because of how complex the autobox?

Can I have a YAY or a NEIGH if I am correct about the complexity?:D

The SE fast road box, everything else including manual is CRAP IMHO.

i guess more things can go wrong with the auto box itself, true... but the auto box protects the rest of the engine by making its own decisions - ie. not changing down from 5th into 1st on the motorway... stuff like that...

Macca, I take it the SE Option is an Auto and takes out all the complex rubbish?? Or is it even more complex but more reliable?

I'm interested to see how long your new manwell box will last Macca. Apparently the standard box can take up to 650bhp. The all important question is "How long"?

LOL Well It's brand new so probably 4 weeks

Does that include your manwell? :D

Aww, maybe you need to get down the Gym because you left leg has wasted away from lack of use? or is the extra pedal all a bit confusing  :D

LOL Hey Bolt head,I drive a manual everyday

Anyway I wont have a problem with the carbon clutch as Duffer tells me it is lighter than Smithys RPS

 :D

manual boxes tend to get more stick, so don't last as long - complexity of autobox means it's advanced, but this makes it drive (convert engine revs to rear axle) better.

autos change gear quicker than most manwells even tho' you lose a little more power thru the box. once tried, autos are often preferred, but really high power mods can make the autobox vulnerable.

ie. not changing down from 5th into 1st on the motorway... stuff like that...

If you suffer from this problem, you are probably better off with an auto!!!

Hands up who's had a manual to auto conversion ;)

TBH, If you suffer from this problem, you're probably better off in a Metro!!!!

Manuals are just more fun, But Auto's are better if you do a lot of town driving.

I've got a good U.K. auto with ECU the full shooting match if you need one give me a PM. Needless to say I went from auto to manwell.

Auto boxes break (in various ways)

Manual boxes wear out synchros and clutches.

Both are expensive to repair, but autos probably more so. Also when an auto breaks it's usually a tow truck home, when a manual goes you can usually manage to drive for a while without synchro, or a gear or two or even a clutch if it's really desperate ...

Thats the kinda reply I was looking for, thanks Andy.

Well how come my torque convertor has got noisy within a year and about 1,500 miles??? Doesnt make sense to me? Not very happy about this, is this common? :nono:

I am thinking Manwell is better personally.....

LOL Well It's brand new so probably 4 weeks

Oh well.... If it does go 'A' over 'T' you better write a cheque out for one of those straight-cut sequentials................ ;)

LOL Hello Robert;)

I really don't know what to do on that side of things

I mean I really do want one,but to pay 7k for it to last 800miles Is a no no :nono:

MAC, I'll be interested in seeing how your gearbox handles the power. Have you run the motor in yet BTW ???

Are they trying to tell you that a 7k gearbox will last just 700 miles?

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?? ;)
