Auto Gearbox.......heeeellllpppppp!!!

OK, my car has been into a proper auto-gearbox specialist in Leicester for nearly a month. However, after all of the "work" carried out on the car, it's no bloody different.

Firstly, when the car has been left for a time it STILL takes a few seconds to properly engage reverse, sometimes delays going into DRIVE also. The guy at the garage has roadtested the car and tells me it's fine!!

He apparently found a damaged electrical "conduit" between the gearbox and the ECU (which he repaired) and he carried out a full service including the addition of "trick fluid" to improve the gear changes.

If this so-called expert is telling me my gearbox is OK, where do I go to now because I believe it is not well????????

well for starters conduit is only a metal tube which wires run through, not convinced there is any on zed, and if there is and it was damaged aslong as the wires inside were ok it wouldnt make any difference. has the fluid definitely been changed?

If you want advice on whats going on with the box, try talking to Haj at Old Forge Garage ( its in Belvedere in Kent) describe the fault and see what he makes of it, he did the box on my 200sx 3 years ago after I blew up the torque converter , and up untill i took the engine out its been perfect, the garage does not look all that but hes very good.(not cheap but good)) 01322 431158.

If you are unhappy with the repair then get an independant inspection by the AA or RAC and try to get your money back or the repair done properly.

Not being an auto man I wouldn't be able to add anything major to this thread but what initially springs to mind is, Solonoids? and I take it they did a full flush on it?

Also, do you get any whining from the box at high revs when it's cold? I've heard that this is also a symptom of a dodgy solonoid.

Matty - didn't you have autobox problems at one time that were sorted with a 2 hour flush?

Cos, I did have a flush at VMTP in Cannock it did make my gearbox all nice and smooth, cut out the problem with the speed sensor but having the flush showed up some major flaws in my autobox (it was on it's way out!!) and it failed.

I covered about 60 miles on my way to Billing, and at which point the autobox gave up and dumped all the fluid over the hot exhuasts........left me and 2 mates next to the road for 7 hours waiting for the RAC to arrive with a flatbed!!

I imported a brand sapnking new autobox from Nend and had it fitted at VMTP, as far as I know the box is still going strong (as you'd expect being new!!) isn't it Chunk :)

VMTP were really good I have to admit, plus they do know there onions. He did say that he'd never seen such damage to an autobox in his life.......they had porkers, etc.. in the workshop.

If you have a good autobox I would suggest doing the flush every 12-24 months depending on use, prevention is better than cure!! ;) mine will be goign in around Christmas time for a flush at VMTP.

Matty.

They tell me that the fluid was changed and it looks quite clean.

The garage also changed the speed sensor, so I'm at a loss.

Might give the place Matty used a try...

Given how many more auto's there are on the road compared to 10 years ago, you'd think there would be a lot more specialists. I'd take it back to the garage in Leicester but they just don't fill me with ANY confidence.

Back to square one I think!!!

The box is going great guns, shame about the rest of the Z!!!! ;)

Chris, Have you tried D & K transmissions in Whetstone, a mate has used them, says they were spot on. their Phone number 01162867227

sounds like a problem in the valve chest to me, poss a sticking pressure regulating valve.

when it does engage, does it engage smoothly or harshly (like a small jolt?)

The only electrical "conduit" is the gearbox/alternator harness.

Sounds like they are trying a bit of techno bullshit to me!

A faulty wire wouldn't make it engage slowly - it would either be intermitant or not working at all.

It's got to be an internal problem on the box IMHO

If you think flushing your auto will help your wrong, if it needs flushing its BECAUSE its going wrong. And chainging the fluid is mstly a waste of time and money for the same reasons. A delay in taking up the gear might well be worn seals on the clutch pistons, which means its on its last legs. However IF, and who knows from here, its just seals it would be cheaper than if it damages hard parts. You need some proper advice, and from what I read thats not on here, inc me.

Yes I'd agree you need to find a proper auto box specialist to investigate.

Doesn't sound like one of the usual common problems to me

Had my Autobox reconed at VMTP alike Matty, very very good service and very honest people....really know their stuff...
