All,

Shamefully, I kerbed the nearside wheel turning right over a mini-roundabout yesterday. The Alloy looks OK (scratched but not buckled), but the kerb seems to have put a bit of a tear into the sidewall of my tyre.

The tear is a V-shape, in the direction of the turning wheel, starting from where it meets the (stock) alloy, and has basically peeled back some of the rubber. The thing that concerns me is the depth of it. I reckon it's probably 3-4mm deep (into the rubber) at the lowest point (it slopes inward over about an inch and a half).

This is a Toyo Proxes T1S tyre with not much wear at all. I'm basically worried about a possible blow-out where the tyre-wall has been weakened.

So, my question is - should I bite the bullet and fit a new tyre? If so, do you think I should change both fronts? They've done about 5k quite gently and still have plenty of tread. It would serve me right, wouldn't it?!

Please let me know,

Russ.

Is it down to the cords? if it is then replace it.

many tyres have "rim protectors" built into them now, & quite a lot of rubber is just there for that.

cud u get it tested somewhere ?

I would change it if the tear is that deep. Apart from being a safety issue you are likely to acquire points on your licence as it is illegal!

Bottom line is that you dont know what internal tyre damage there is and the sidewall is now obviously weakened!

Your call.

Change it, its as simple as that!!

OK - thanks folks. Just confirms what I've been thinking. So does anyone have a problem with me changing just that side? Should I do 'em in pairs or is that unnecessary?

  its not illegal unless the cords are exposed!! ah well, what do i know - spend your money

yes it is,

cuts. lumps, bulges, tears or exposure of the ply or cord, separation of the tread

A tyre has a cut longer than 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre. whichever is the greatest, and deep enough to reach the ply or cord.

A tyre with a lump, bulge or tear caused by separation or partial failure of its structure, including lifting of the tread,

Any ply or cord exposed.

You dont have to do pairs, depends on how much tred you have on the other side to warrent changing both, if you do only change one I'd make sure you get the same make/type as the other one.

not being funny mate but read what you posted too!

reach the cords I said (mot manual) exposed cords you said.

Down to interpretation I guess. but what do I know about it?....

I dont have a dodgy tire though......

LOL!! so whats the difference between "cords are exposed" & deep enough to reach the cords????

So should he replace it or not? :D:D:D

It doesn't reach any cords - just pure black rubber. Quite a bite out of the side-wall though! :(

LMAO I'm tyred of this thread now  :D:D:D

Don't seem to be gaining any traction in this discussion do we?

Uy, it get's worse! I thought it was a gripping thread, but it's starting to wear now. We'd better tread carefully.

But seriously - one tyre or two?!

Russ.

ONE unless the other side is seriously worn anyway.

Any more meat to pull off this carcass? :D

I would replace it me thinks. Whats more important, your life and others around or £100 tyre. Just change it and be done with it, really not worth the risk. If it was a metro and you never went over 30mph I would say dont worry should be fine, but a car capable of 170mph plus!!! A Z puts serious stress on tyres, the tyre is only as strong as its weakest point.

Oh and one should do it.

LOL!! so whats the difference between "cords are exposed" & deep enough to reach the cords????

would imagine that would cover a flap off the sidewall still attached?

Agree with last post entirely! (last but 1 anyway!)
