Insurance On A Second Car.

How does insurance work on a second car? Do you have to put it on a new policy or can you add it to your existing one. Driving my Z all the time is costing too much and I need a day driver to drive to uni, the pub, take away. biggrin.gif

I dunno about the UK, but I pay $170 a month for 2 cars.

It was $150 for 1 car, you can put it with the same policy, and most companies in the US does a multicar discount.

You take out a seperate policy, which will have zero no claims (you cannot declare the no claims you have on your current policy, or it needs to be removed from your current policy!), and it'll cost just as much as if you only had one car (well ok, some insurers offer a slight discount)...

Basically, it's a ripoff..

Surprise surprise, this is the UK after all..

God man, how much are you paying on insurance on a Z and a 19?

I was thinking of a little Metrol Diesel for a runaround, but just got a quote for £700. "Piss off!

Stuart

.... Wait for it..

£1750 FC on the Z (4yrs NCB)

£500 TPF&T on the 19 (1yrs NCB)

Az

I agree - biggest ripoff going.

Any points, accidents, previous claims which you have will increase the cost of insuring your second car. However, all your years of claim free / conviction free driving are totally ignored. I have 14 years of the former, even if I don't have much of the latter. However, they still charge me the maximum possible on my Sierra. End result is that the Sierra TPFT costs half of what the TVR costs fully comp.

Obviously I'm not bitter !

P.S. Many people I know put their second car in someone elses name and then drive on their '3rd party on a car not owned by you' part of the fully comp policy. Needless to say I would never endorse any attempt to deprive an insurance company of any money. They deserve every penny.

Further to what Dave says, great idea but the car in someone elses name does need to be subject to a valid (and seperate) insurance policy too.

So if you get a 2CV Diane and put it in your brothers name and drive it on your own insurance(TPFT), if 'your brother' doesn't have a policy on this car then, by law, you will have to answer some sticky questions.

These big business Insurance Money-Funsters have us stitched up by the bollocks. And the reason? They have the law on their side full stop.

Ever tried arguing against an Insurance conviction in court? No point. 6 points and thank you very much frown.gif

Bastards.

Glen.

My MR2 is on my policy as a second car, fully comp and my policy is only £583 with Bell Direct. I just rang them up and asked them to put a second car on my policy. As long as the car is not insured by anyone else, then it's no problem.

Anyway, I'm off out now. Useless fact of the Day #391

Bloody women and their cheap car insurance wink.gif :P

I'm just gonna insure the Kirk for the lovely sum of 450 squid per annum and do a Thelma & Swiss Cheese in the Twin Tub...

"any cliffs round here honey bun? Oh and do these Mazza Monroe shock absorber shades look good on me, this shade of cherry red lipstick and this chiffon scalf? Truth now!!!" biggrin.gif

Insurance in the UK is a bag of WANK!!!! I mean why the fuck do I pay £823 fully comp on the Zed but to insure a Pug 309 1.3l it would cost £900 third party only??? I mean FFuckSake frown.gif So my mum insures the pug and I drive it on my 3rd party as Dave so kindly suggested - SO SUE ME!!!!!!! biggrin.gif

I'm in a really good mood tonight biggrin.gif Honest frown.gif

CheerZ,

I dont know thier logic sometimes. I had a G reg Astra 1.3 merit, and they wanted £680 TPFT for it but wanted £1050 for the Z. Hmmmm, £680 for a 0-60 in 15sec, 62bhp, £300 car and only £370 more for a 0-60 in 5.2sec, 300bhp, £5000 car.

Insurance Companies.

Tossers.

Just my two penneth.

Glen

insurance companies ... arseholes. My premium doubled after a year. WIth the same company. Nothing was different, just another year older with another years no claims.

What does amuse me is that tesco seem to be a bit confused atm. They'll insure me on a 95 Supra TT for £800 _less_ than a 91 ZX TT.

It's almost tempting to take it...it's less than the premium for my bmw FFS.

  • Author

WTF. Me too. Supra TT is £300 cheaper. Why?

Is it because the ZX came with no security from new?

Stuart. :S

Bell Direct lets me have a second car with the full NCB. Priviledge was my last insurer but when I bought the Z they wanted to give 0 NCB on second car. Whereas Bell said same NCB on both. Also both are insured NCBs. It'll be a yeear soon and I'm just waiting to see the renewals. Both cars are costing around £600 ea.

Stuart

aaronjb is right that with the second car you have to start again on the no claims front.

I was in exactly the same situation as you and bought a 1990 Escort 1.3 as a runabout before realising this.

However talked to Firebond and got insurance as a classic car for only £94 with zero no claims bonus, which for a change, was a bit of good news from an insurance company, as everyone else was quoting around £300.
