Smoking Exhaust!!!

People, help me - I am having a crisis. I have only had my ZX TT a short time and the drivers side tail pipe has decided that it wants to take up smoking when I'm stuck in traffic. An ideas?

I have only had the car 4 days from a private sale and the annoying thing is that when I to see it, I drove it for about 45 minutes and did the rev check. The only thing that did not happen is that we did not get stuck in traffic at all. This is the reason that I have taken out 5 star private warranty but I am not sure if the warranty company are just gonna turn oround and say, "Sorry mate - turbo seals? Thats wear and tear!"

Am currently feeling very gutted and depressed about the whole situation. Will feel much better if someone can give me some confidence boosting information like "The engines DONT usually go wrong as long as they are service when they should be" and "oh, you had your cam belt changed by Nissan 10K ago, that should be ok for a good while".

I guess its the "New car gitters" where every new squeek and rattle makes you think that something is wrong.

But anyway, does anyone know if SE have a web site or can anyone tell me where they are please.

Ta.

if you can elaborate that would be useful...;o)

I know you say that smoke is not coming out of your exhausts but has your oil not been going down?

Surely it uses some and if so, has it not damaged your cats?

Okay.. try this... don't laugh but take note. My Zed's stock turbos started smoking 2.5 years ago. They're still in there. Last oil change (Friday) and no smoke.. none..notta...not happening. When they first started smoking I didn't want to drive the car.

Still reading ? Yes I thought you were.

1. Check the temp sensor, clean the plugs and replace sensor if necessary. - These can sometimes cause problems with overrich running at idle which washes the bores and out comes the oil.

2. Search out a MOTUL oil stockist (try Gary at GTART www.gtart.co.uk) and put in a fresh load of MOTUL 300V Chrono Racing 10w40 and hang onto your money for a bit longer.

I've been running MOTUL for quite some time now and at the beginning of every fresh oil change - no smoke, after a few thousand kays a little blue stuff starts appearing. Good sign to change the oil. When you first drive the car from cold in the mornings or evenings make absolutely sure that you warm it up for 3-4mins and drive gently for the first 5 mins . If you exceed the big 4 mark when it's cold this forces oil past the seals on the turbo and it starts smoking.

The stuff that started my turbos off was ELF Synthese 5w40. The seals just did not like it. The oil was pouring out the seals and creating billowing clouds of smoke. But now there's virtually none.

And whats more your engine gets protected with some of THE best oil there is full stop.

If it doesn't work, well it's money you had to spend on oil anyway.

Rowan

I posted the reason why i asked in a different thread yesterday. Not going to go into details because it won't help.

I guess its the "New car gitters" where every new squeek and rattle makes you think that something is wrong.

I dont know about new car jitters. I freak out about my car all the time. Always have.

As for warranties, you can't win. If you don't get one, you know that something that would have been covered is going to break (like your ABS or something evil). But if you do get one, then you also know that whatever does break wont be covered (turbo's or something equaly scary).

I've come to terms with the fact that cars are a huge moneypit.

I'm not prepeared to trade having a nice car but paying for it all the time, for having a car that never breaks and everything is covered by the manufacturers warranty, becuase I'd rather spend £8000 on a z than on a new fiesta.

My Warranty is with WH Holdings and so far (touch wood) they have been all right. They paid out quite happily for my PTU oh and my turbos too when one seized utterly on me. And to be fair, Nissan in Dunstable did a damn good job on my car despite me telling them that I didn't believe them when they told me that my turbos had seized and taking it home putting it over the pit and then going Oh.... And then taking it back to Nissan and saying "Actually, you were right" They hardly gloated at all! smile.gif But they did all the contacting of the Warranty company and even did a quick service on it before hand to make sure that the service record was clean biggrin.gif

So brand new stock (I know, I know.... frown.gif) turbos cost me about £500 all in, I think, above the Warranty claim.

It's been a Looooong time since my car had cats

Yes it uses a little oil, but it only takes a few drops of oil to produce that blue smoke.

Well,

It looks like Johny from GPS wins the day. I have spoken to him and he is going to be sorting me out with a breather kit.

TOP BANANA!!

Thanks people.

Hmmm, think I'd like one of those too. How much ?

Looks like I could be contributing to the Ginger ones new cams, for a second time this week !

Around £250-£300 for the Breather kit including fitting. You're best off calling Johny for a more acurate price.

Hey hey the ginger bread man wins again biggrin.gif The more support he gets the better the prices get so keep buying people biggrin.gif I know I am - the only condition on me buying parts from johnny is that when he gets something new for his car which I have helped pay for, I get to sign the part biggrin.gif

CheerZ,

Andy
