Hi all my Z is in bits!

I need to know how to take the bottom cover off to get to the lower bolts of thw water pump.

I've undone all the bolts but it looks like it wont come past the bottom pulley, and I cant remove that as there seems to be no way of locking it up so it doesnt spin? I've looked at the service manual but even that doesnt help??

Please can anyone tell me what to do as im sat here looking at a poorly z scratching my arse

Cheers

Steve

Ok another updatei need something that locks the wheel shilst i can turn the nut any ideas?

either remove the starter motor and put a screwdriver through the teeth or I think you can just put in 5th gear (you'll need to get that confirmed)

much easier with an air gun, but i dont suppose that helps you much ;)

recently tried it with an airgun and couldnt get the bolt undone with that either!!

If it is a manual, put it in gear and get someone to put their foot on the brake, the get a 24 or 36 inch bar and give it some welly. If It is an auto then use the belt wrap technique shown here. With respect to Mr Duff

Its an auto im afraid so tehe gear thing wont work and i havnt got a spare belt to ruin :S any other ideas?

Would it not be possible to use a piece of wood as a wedge between the aircon adjuster and the pulley,if ya get me drift ;)

or am i talking shite!

Well, I had tried clamps, adjustable spanners, all padded with wood, whilst using the biggest bar on it you ever seen, even wedged wrecking bar between floor, other pulleys, and is just bends, starts to chew things up not good, well pissed of spent a whole ****ING day trying to get one sodding buggering part off.

:(((((

Hi,

Not everybodys ideal solution, but here goes !!!

Brute force and ignorance to wrench it out, yes it does bend slightly out of shape !!! Take a 4" or 5" grinder, cut off the tail that fits behind the pulley, dress it up and also cut a little off the side that bends in to cover the water pump. As long as you dont take too much off, it still does the job, ie, timing marks, covers all the necessary bits and after a quick coat of paint, you have a cover that comes off & on no problems !!

Some may say its rough or a sacrilege, but its only a car at the end of the day !!! ;)

I always use this quick and dirty method and it has never failed me (yet):

-put the socket with a large (and strong) bar on the pulley bolt.

-wrap the bar in a towel and put it into position so it rests against the stabiliser bar on the left side (when standing in front of the car)...you can use a tiewrap to keep the bar into position.

-now START the engine for 2 seconds (with coils, PTU and fuelpump disconnected offcouse ;) )

Note: make sure the bar can't work itself loose and you have a fully charged and strong battery

works on autos AND manuals.

Sometimes all the force you try cant start the bolt off - see if you can give it a sudden sharp bang to get it loose - use the bar to get a lot of tension in it - then whack the bar with a hammer or something to try and jar it loose. Sometimes that works!

Thanks for all of your sugestions guys,

I think that this is the stupidist fking design ever, I mean just to take a cover off to get to two bolts you have to take all the belts and the bloody crank off, how pathetic is that? I think the bloke who sat down and designed the layout of the engine should be shot, same story with everything on this bloody car you gotta take a hundred things off just to get to one sodding bit.

I tried the hammering thing to break it loose but the wheel just moved too freely,TBH i was contempalting cutting the fking cover off and making a new one, in the end managed to get it off, managed to get a G clamp around the big wheel and hold it steady with a wrecking bar whilst levering the clamp one way and the centre nut with a ****ing great big bar the other, it eventually gave up.

Not bad only one and a half days to get the crank off, can anyone beat that lmfao!

To top it off the water pump now looks ok, but was deff leaking, i'm hoping when the new one is on and re-sealed it will solve my leaking problem!
